Unfortunately, I returned my Oldwin as it had several issues, with the nib and the finish which I could not come to terms with at such a price point. Good customer service from Mr Mora though no complaints there.

Can you elaborate on the issues? I want to have an idea of what to look out for. Thanks

Wowzers that arco verde looks amaaaazing! I wish I'd got that now instead of the lucens... Thank you for posting pics- I've been on the lookout for them since December!

To start with, the body was all covered in micro scratches, as if the pen had been used for a while. Plus the area of the section near the threads was not polished to the same degree as the rest of the pen, there was a mm or two of the material almost matte. Mr Mora told me that this was inevitable because the pen is hand made. I am sceptical about that. My Nakaya is completely hand made but it is literally flawless, I actually inspected it with a loupe and could not find a single issue (and mind you, it is cheaper than Oldwin). I am of the view that premium hand made objects should receive more attention than mass produced.

Then I discovered that the nib was overpolished, to the point where it had the notorious baby's bottom problem – it would hard start and skip on smooth paper.

Finally, I found a small chip at the end of the barrel, where it tapers. Celluloid is rather temperamental material and I wouldn't want the crystallisation process to start developing in that area.

Separately all of these things may be considered to be fairly minor. However, at such a price point I expect the pen to be flawless and the nib to be well adjusted, without me needing to spend time and money on a nibmeister. To be fair, Mr Mora offered me to have a look at the nib and try to do more polish on the barrel. I would have agreed if it was one issue, I guess I was disappointed to discover so many of them, more so as I had heightened expectations having read glorious reviews about Oldwins. And this may well be just this one pen but that was sufficient for me.

That said, I cannot stress enough the high level of customer service from Mr Mora who was very responsive and courteous and refunded my order no problem. Maybe it's just me with my strict standards... spoiled by the Japanese quality :)

Here is the other Arco Verde. I went with the gold trim. Since furiozzo provided so many nice photos of his pen, I am just posting 2 glamour shots. As you can see, the pattern on my pen is a little different, and why i picked the gold trim instad of the better matching rhodium.

Thank you for the review! The Oldwin Art Deco is on my grail list and this one is one of the prettiest! I have seen it on a couple of visits to Mr. Nora's shop and it is exquisite! Enjoy!

You are most welcome. Thanks for you comment.

If I lived in Paris, I think I would be in Mora's too often for my financial health.

While the celluloid is disappointingly short on that fantastic blue on my pen, the nib is a nice wet writer. That's good for me as I tend to like wider nibs so the wetness makes up for the fact it is an M to some extent.

Let's just say I like the pens enough to have bought 4 since December. Yikes!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
