I wanted to make my Baoer 388 write finer, so I bought "fine" Jinhao #5 replacement nib, got one, but the slit width is different (wider) and sadly it does not fit. I tried to use pliers, however, that resulted a messed a cheap nib. So, be careful.

The Bock #5 nib unit seems unusually hard to strip the nib from compared to a #6.

The only Baoer pen I owned had a section that was way too thin for my comfort.

It was a juicy wet writer, which was a big plus when using dry writing or inks or weak colours.

As the Chinese don't seem to do much in the way of alternate tip widths a swop is the only alternative.

I installed a #5 FPR "flex nib" in my Baoer 388 not long after I bought it. It instantly became my #1 EDC. Now, I realized when I installed it—and really had to shove hard to get it in—I knew I was going to leave it in permanently. I would've left it in anyway. I eventually gave it away when I was at a restaurant in Bozeman MT (hey Asher!). My server noticed the pocket "Shakespeare" notebook I'd placed on the table and said he always carried a pocket notebook to write in. When I learned he was also an avid reader of classics, that did it. I couldn't let that kind of behavior go unrewarded. While he was busy with another table I began to sneak-leave my gift. I took my pen out of my pocket. As usual, it was my 388. I set it on the table next to the ticket with my cash payment, and then I realized I'd better give him the ink that was already in there. I hightailed it to my car parked in 25 degrees Fahrenheit on the street, grabbed the bottle, ran back, and set it next to the pen. I left a note with minimal instructions, my phone number, and this website, and said call me or go to FPN if you have a question or problem. Now that I'm home from my road trip I plan to buy another 388 and shove another #5 FPR "flex nib" into it.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

I know this is years on, but….

I just bought a batch of 388s to give to students and I wanted to get some spare nibs in case of damage or faults.  Does anyone have any updated advice?

I was about to buy the Jinhao #5 until I saw this post:

I’ve inked 2 and I quite like the writing experience so far, but I am also willing to experiment a little also.

any advice gratefully received.

SBREBrown did a video on YT on how to fix an inner cap problem. Hope this helps for your particular pen:

Brilliant.

Thanks so much for posting that. I have a well used x450 which I dropped and the inner cap broke with the shock when it hit the hard floor. Now I can fix it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
