It seems that in 2010 Montblanc changed the manufacturer of their ink as well as the design of the bottle. The company's issued a new, larger (60 ml vs 50 ml) bottle. To be honest I find Montblanc bottle not only nice but also practical, much better than Iroshizuku or Sailor.

The new colours launched in 2010 include:

 

  1. Burgundy Red
  2. Irish Green
  3. Lavender Purple
  4. Mystery Black
  5. Midnight Blue
  6. Oyster Grey
  7. Royal Blue
  8. Toffee Brown

Midnight Lavender is quite interesting ink although it's not really Lavender color. Not at all. It has a little shading and depending on how wet the nib or feed is, the color can look almost quite dark or a softer, muted blueberry. As most Montblanc inks it behaves well ion variety of papers.

Nice to see this ink on the different papers. You are right in the shade not being lavender. I like the shading. Thanks for another excellent review.

I like this ink. But my favourite regular MB ink is Corn Poppy Red!

Good. I am waiting on some now.

I believe that the ink was reformulated in late 2014. There have been all kinds of theories about why the ink ceased to be available for a period and was reintroduced in a new formulation.

 

I have written with both the older formulation and the current one. The current one is redder. Somewhere on the forum there is a side-by-side comparison, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

Hmm. I've still got a bottle of the old, but this looks nice should I need to replace it.

I seem to recall that I once phoned MB in Hamburg and they told me that the "original" needed repair due to it dryness and/or poor lubrication. They didn't say anything about a colour change. I only have the old version so I can't make any comparison. In an case, the first (new) Lavender which came out in Nov-Dec 2009 had the Ident. No. 105196 and the new one has retained the same number.

It's a lovely ink. I picked up a bottle fairly recently. It's kind of aubergine with a small hint of red underneath

I only wish these inks were fade resistant. Thank you again for a great review.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
