Caroube De Chypre - J. Herbin 1670 Ink

As most of you already know in two months J. Herbin will introduce new ink in 1670 glittery line - Caroube de Chypre. That's great. I was afraid that after Diamine Shimmertastic inks mass introduction J. Herbin will have hard time engineering some new color. They've decided to go with brown with goldish particles and named this ink Caroube de Chypre. Mishka from Bureaudirect sent me a sample and I'd like to present some photos and thoughts on the ink.

Tghe color can be described as reddish brown. The flow is nice alythough some particles always stay in the feed. Happily they're easy to clean. I'm not crazy about the color but let's be honest 1670 line isn't 100 % about unique color, it's more about beautiful bottle and color / glitter combo. And Caroube de Chypre shines like crazy. Also I'm impressed by J. Herbin marketing - they make people wonder whether they'll see another ink in 1670 line, make them wait impatiently. To be honest it's much better than introducing a lot of special inks at once. Personally I dislike shimering inks and I lack motivation to review all Diamine line. However I'm always eager to try new J. Herbin ink (or Pelikan Edelstein Ink of the Year) because they make me feel it'll be something special. It never is but I wait impatientluy to try it nevertheless :)

Enough talking. Let's take a look at some pictures.

Nice. I like the fact that, bar Stormy Grey, the rest of the 1670 line has quite good saturation. In saying that, as a grey ink, Stormy Grey is very good on the saturation front.

I am funny with my red-browns... I love them, but a tad too much red on it and then I dont like them. Not sure if I can explain it. :P

I like this one, I am looking forward to a bottle of it.

I expected to hate this one when I first heard about it. Yet here I am, already consumed with lust for it...euh.

I think I don't like it because IMO it's nothing more than a boring reddish brown with a little or a lot of glitter depending on how much it's shaked and what version the bottle happens to be when I buy one. But I'll still think more about it.

I find this a really interesting ink - it's almost chameleon-like in its ability to take on different colours depending on the paper and nib used. I'm not sure how much shimmer is too much shimmer, but brown is one of my favourite colours, so I've decided to give it a try. I use a medium nib and sometimes a stub, so I'm curious to see what colours show and how much shimmer appears when I write on white or cream coloured paper. Ah, the anticipation!

Mike, where is your poetry? :) It's lovely, if Mike does not like it that means: all the more for me!

I'm not a huge fan of red-leaning browns, but the gold lightens it up and cuts the red undertone nicely.

Thanks for the review. This one goes on the short list. And not.... Sigh. My husband already thinks I have too many ink bottles....

Thank you for the review..

Like You I don't like shimmer inks..

Though I agree with you it's a good marketing campaign to launch a new color every year.. But at the same time one cannot say that launching inks in one go is not that good.. Maybe they are in a way good when you have so many colors available to choose from... And diamine inks are inexpensive than J. Herbin ones..

Nevertheless I don't like sparkled inks

Oooh, how lovely! I'm so glad inks with glitter seem to be coming into style...may there be many more! >:D

Nice review, Vis! I am not a big fan of glitter inks. I had a small sample left of Bleu Ocean and Stormy Grey and have been playing with them for a few days. Not at all impressed. Someone said that everyone needs a little glitter in my life. Well, maybe, but not in my fountain pen ink.

Another great review. This will be the first of the 1670 line that I won't buy as I'm not a fan of the red-brown.

I've found that Caroube de Chypre is very much similar to Colorverse Dark Energy in writing, with both being maroon. Dark Energy sheens olive green much more easily and prominently and is slightly colder toned. I can hardly call Caroube de Chypre a brown: it looks more like muted dark red / maroon than brown at all. Perhaps with gold shimmer overlaid and some green sheen canceling out the redness, it starts looking brown. Unfortunately to get the green sheen, even some of my high flow vintage pens are not enough, on Japanese paper! To get the advertised effect of sheen and shimmer (though mostly shimmer), a dip pen or a fintage flexy pen, or something like FPR Himalaya with Ultraflex nib + a good amount of bottle shaking prior to filling are highly recommended.

In summary: use a very wet writer and non absorbent paper for the advertised look for something like holiday cards. Otherwise expect a muted maroon color with basically no sheen and just a hint of fine shimmer.

Edited to clarify and also to add that I really like the ink and it can look gorgeous with the full special effects present. It may come as a surprise when getting a bottle or a sample that the base ink looks decidedly non-brown with a conservative to generous pen, and needs a very wet or flex pen to get the full effect.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
