Cloudy Ig Residue In Piston Filler

Gabriel, what other inks do you have in your collection? DSS is a stainer, I have never had the IG Turquoise stain. DSS will come right out after a few uses of an ink that is a good cleaner.

+1 to what Amber said.

IG Turquoise is very saturated, but I've never had any staining issues with it. Oh yeah, and I love the color.

Sargasso Sea is a well-known stainer, so maybe that's where your problems come from?

Amber: what good cleaner inks do you have in mind?

What is ink is amazing for ... getting out stains. With just one use, the pen went from this:

Anyway, I am a big believer that you should clean your pens between color changes and change your colors often. :)

Just be sure that you clean the pen - completely - when switching types of ink.

Thanks! The FC 66 cleaned out perfectly after using KVZ IG turquoise. I refilled it with Montblanc Irish Green. I plan to use this up and refill with the Iron Gall Turquoise, switching back and forth for a couple of months, being more careful to clean between uses of different inks. Appreciate this thread!

I think the content these two threads are priceless.

Is there a chance of making them "stickys"?

  • 3 months later...

Sorry to bump this topic, but unfortunately I've had it happen again :(

This time a new TWSBI Eco, first inking, and with a new bottle of KWZ Foggy Green. Again I believe there's physical abrasion of the barrel by the piston when I went to flush the ink. I'll try to get some macro shots this weekend to show the tiny scratches I see through the loupe. The piston is resistant enough to moving back now that I don't think I could get it out without breaking the piston assembly (I pulled the nib & feed to finish the flush from the front with a syringe, but I'm afraid the body is done for anyway.)

Noting that there was another user earlier in this topic who had the same issue with another KWZ ink and an Eco, I'm still wondering if there's some very specific interaction between some component in some KWZ inks and the lubricant used by TWSBI. (But I also see in my ink log I've used a KWZ Dark Brown sample in an Eco without incident, and similarly KWZ Honey in a TWSBI 580AL, so it's not all KWZ inks, or at least not always.) I think I'll contact TWSBI, and if Konrad sees this thread and has any ideas that would be good to hear as well.

Here are the best pics I could get: first is front-lit, second is side-lit, third is a full-res detail of the second. (Pen is nib-up, with the piston at the top of the pic.)

Coming at this from another angle.

In cars, lubricants do not scratch without something solid in the lubricant. Such as a bearing coming apart releasing metal shavings or another substance mixing with the lubricant, such as coolant. I have had wheel bearings burn up, literally, because of a loss of grease.

What I see is the grease, on this case silicone, no longer present allowing the micro pieces of iron in the IG ink to come out of suspension. The other possibility to me is the silicone grease holding onto pieces of iron and scratching that way.

I suggest not using IG inks in pain fillers, only C/C pens.

Peace and Understanding

And yet the same Foggy Green in a treasured Omas Ogiva is effortless and caused no piston problems to date.

I've actually had a bit of sluggishness with the standard Cherry in an M1000 as opposed to the greased lightning of IG Red #1 in the sister pen. Have to wonder if I'd rinsed sufficiently before inking with the Cherry as the Pels are on their first use since my last house move.

Fuzzy Bear: This one was Foggy Green, not an IG ink. I agree, there's clearly got to be some solid particles doing the scratching. I noticed no scratching in the initial filling, so I don't think the lubricant had particles to start with. I'm puzzled.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
