Caran d'Ache 849 Brut Rose and Cross Century circa 1985. About to swap the original refills for Schneider replacements. The performance on the original refills is pretty boring.

Kaweco Classic Sport rollerball with Pilot Frixion 0.5mm conical tip on Midori Diamond approx 3" x 5" memo pad. It's smooth, erasable and without show or bleed through even in my Moleskin.[/quote

I wasn't aware that the pilot refill would fit in the Kaweco rollerball pen. Is there a comprehesive guide of rollerball refill compatibility? If so may I please the link. Many thanks :)

Don't know if there's comprehensive guide or not, but many manufacturers (specially small ones such as Kaweco) outsource their refills to other bigger companies so they have to accept universal solutions such as the Pilot G2 standard refill.

Be aware that the G2 is not limited to Pilot, search for Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 and Schneider G2 refills. They're a great option too.

I have used not just the Pilot Frixion and Pilot G-2 refills, but also the Uniball Signo Micro 207 0.5 mm and my current favorite the Pilot Juice 0.38 mm Dark Red.

All need to be cut down in size to fit the Kaweco Classic Sport rollerball pen, but they write better than the 0.7 mm it ships with. I use a utility knife to shorten the refill to the same length as the original Kaweco one. An added benefit of the Pilot Juice Dark Red refill is the ink is virtually waterproof.

I next intend to order a Dark Red Juice in the 0.5 mm size expecting it to be smoother than the 0.38.

I love the versatility refill-wise of this pen and plan to order different colored one from the black i already own.

But I may be interested in the Zebra R-301, and /or the J. Herbin refillable. Do they take standard cartridges, or do you have to use the Zebra/J. Herbin cartridges exclusively?

The Herbin takes standard international cartridges. The Zebra uses a proprietary cartridge, though you can refill your empties with a syringe.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
