Chopard And Cartier Pens - First Really Expensive Purchase

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have been liking my fountain pens for quite some time now and want to get my first "really expensive" pen.

I am interested mostly in some pens from Cartier, Chopard and Montblanc. You get an idea about the price range.

I have read many things about Montblanc pens already, but I find it hard to find much information about Cartier and Chopard pens.

What is the general consensus about them, are they good writers, are they very overpriced and rather comparable to lower end pens, or maybe something entirely different?

Keep in mind that I will not be able to try these pens before I buy them, I have to "blind buy" them online most likely.

Pens that caught my eye were:

Chopard Racer
Montblanc Rouge et Noir (the new one)
Cartier Roadster
and some from the MB great characters.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Xozzen,

I don't like the looks of the MB at all, but the Cartier and Chopard you mentioned are gorgeous, especially the former. Here's a review of it: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/149424-cartier-pasha-roadster/

Please, let us know when you make up your mind.

Best!

Marcelo

Thank you for your answer!

Well, I'm sure you like some of the great characters MBs though ;)

So in general, are Chopard and Cartier pens any good or mostly name brand?

Generally Cartier are very good pens. I have no knowledge of Chopard though.

Can't speak for Chopard but I own a Cartier Diabolo and it's a very smooth writer that feels really nice in your hand.

I have a louis cartier in wood and is generally a good writer BUT I would say that montblanc piston filling system is much more interesting than the converter/cartdrige used by cartier and chopard.

Personally I would recommend the montblanc. As a daily writing the rouge et noir would be my favourite. Not the most expensive pen but certainly one of the most usable ones.

It seems style, brand and presentation is most important - and that is fine. So of the three brands you mentioned, given you are in Germany I recommend a Mont Blanc. Since this is your first high-end pen, it really should be the Mont Blanc 149. If the 149 is too big, try a smaller model but in the same classic style as the 149. But you really can't beat the MB 149 as a status symbol amongst the "Peasants" though ;)

If I remember correctly, the Chopard's were made by Stipula. One of my favorite brands, but it is Italian, meaning you might get a great one, might not.

Since you are in Germany, is there a reason Graf von Faber Castell is not on your list? I think their high end pens are beautiful without being blingy.
