Brilliant Green - Pelikan 4001

The 4001 ink is a well-established brand by Pelikan from the very first beginning of the company. It was first mentioned in a price-list from 1897 and proved its worth within all the years. Ink 4001 was registered as a number only, during years there was plenty of colors on the market. However in recent years the line didn't change at all. Happily Pelikan decided to invest not only in Edelstein line but also in 4001 (much cheaper) line and introduced new ink (Dark Green) in January 2016. You may find it interesting that Pelikan 4001s are the only inks that can be bought practically in every B&M store in Poland.

At the moment the line consists of

Pelikan Brilliant Green isn't as names would suggest, "brilliant". The color is rather on the dull side and a bit washed out too. The saturation is somewhere in between low and medium. It's well behaved, doesn't cause any bleedthrough and it glides quite well across the paper although it feels a bit dry. The thing is this color is generic and extremely boring.

Pelikan's 'Brilliant' series are good as 'school' inks.

If I'm allowed to get only one ink per color, it would be this line.

Another great review and an ink I'm definitely going to buy. Especially as I found their Brilliant Green just a little too pale for my taste.

Not a bad ink, it is too bright for me though

It looks more like a color that I can obtain from a marker or one of those roller balls than a fountain pen.

Thanks for the review. This is one I can skip -- I really dislike that shade of green for some reason (I had a similar reaction to samples I've gotten of PR Spearmint and Noodler's Green). But seeing inks I *don't* want is as useful as seeing the "ooh, must have!" ones.

Thanks for the review. I have that ink and think that it's a nice shading ink. But green is just such a difficult color, I wouldn't want to read a whole page of writing in it.

Vis, thank you for the sample. I inked it up this weekend. I agree with you. Where is the brilliance?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
