I'm cheap, so I only use cheap nibs from various sources online. The most expensive nib I use are the 3 for $20 flex #6 nibs from FPR. They work great most times, every now and then they need a little tuning to work just right.

It appears in your collection as if it is working for you and your collection is beautiful. Frugal. I like frugal better than cheap. After all, this passion does not allow too much for that word to be used with all seriousness. I am thinking in my own journey when I fell in love with Noodler's Ahabs. they are inexpensive, in fact believe the passion I had for Goulet nibs elevated the pen, since the versions I have only cost $20.00 themselves and the nibs cost $17.00 plush shipping charges. I feel much better having reused a couple of them on more expensive pens. You can't feel much regret about replacing a 14kt gold nib for a steel one. I learned that I enjoy the steel ones better than gold. Now, when I see a pen at some point of interest, I don't have to feel dissuaded because it comes or its nib can be replaced with a steel nib. Progress.

Pen Case 2, this was originally a silverware chest, I got a good deal on it at a rummage sale. It took very little effort to convert it to a pen chest.

The map case intrigues me since I am a librarian and continue to be amused at what card catalog cards are now being used for instead of original purpose. Your collection is spectacular and what you keep them in really breathtaking. This will simply have to do. Could not quite decide. How do you choose your rotation of them, or do you have some which are active and others which are visual, but not used very often?

Please don't take offense. I am picturing how your wife would take you even trying to bring in the level of pens we see and her reaction would no doubt be priceless for bystanders perhaps, but detrimental to you. She might be the regulator of your passion so you don't get out of hand enjoying it.

I have 3 or 4 pens that are always active and about 50-75 that I rotate in and out. I try to keep the number inked at one time down to about eight to 10 but seldom manage to do that. It seems that there is always a request from someone in our local pen club to bring xxx and/or yyy pen to the next meeting so he or she can try it out. Well, that means I have to ink those pens, doesn't it? Or I've just bought a new bottle of ink and just can't wait to try it out. So I ink up another pen. And so it goes.

 

Do note that a very large portion of the collection consists of a single model, Sheaffer Targa. The basic matte black Targa that I inherited from my father was what got me started in pen collecting and I've been attempting to find at least one example of each of the 90 calalog listed versions. I am currently at 85. But since they all use the same nib section (well, there are two sizes, full and slim, for standard and slim pens) they all write pretty much the same so I've never felt the need to write with all 145 of them. I've probably written with about 20-25 of them.

 

And all those other pens that I don't use? They come in real handy when someone here asks a question about zzz pen. If I have one I can get it out and take measurements, pictures, etc. and provide answers. So they do have a use even if I don't write with them anymore. If you look at the very first photo in my previous post, on the top of the map chest you will see a large digital scale, a small and large digital caliper (in boxes) and a small digital scale. These were all purchased for the sole purpose of being able to provide accurate measurement data for my pens.

I do sell a few of the lower tier pens once in a while. Usually at a pen club meeting or at a pen show. I have sold a couple on Pentrace but that was quite a while ago. I haven't braved eBay selling yet, although I have bought more than 200 pens from eBay. But I certainly don't consider myself to be a seller.

Thank you. This little chest can hold a total of 20 pens. My largest wood pen chest that I have made is extreme at holding 100 pens (great way to get exercise is to move it from one room to another).

This is my current pen case line-up:

 

 

Left to right: a Clairefontaine Age Bag in green dyed leather (currently holding mostly pencils and coughballpointscough), a Saki Collection wrap that has three pockets and can hold about 6 pens (if I had 6 pens that is), and a custom leather single pen holder by our very own Michael - when/if I get a decent pen it will live here.

This is a beautiful case! I can't get over how small the knobs are. Looking at all the cases on all of FPN sure increases the 'want' to a 'need'. Oy. I'm determined to keep my FP stash very small. I saw another member's case in a photo not even intended to show off the case! It holds 2 to 3 pens. I've decided I will likely not settle till I get the very one (seems very unique though) or I will have to make it. I will contact them soon I think. —but this cedar box is really gorgeous.

I am currently using one of the leather Wancher 13 pen cases. It's made of super soft leather with enough protection that I am comfortable carrying it in my EDC backpack.

I've not seen a FC Penvelope in real life to compare but I get the feeling, from pictures, it uses heavier weight leather.
