Great job as always, Ricky. I was not able to attend this year after having a blast the last few years. Your photos make me feel like I was there, but without the expense! Thanks for your excellent coverage.

The very popular FC “Coke Bottle” pens. I told Scott he needed the Pepsi bottle pens next.

+1 and AMEN to that!!

Thanks for the AWESOME reportage. I couldn't go, but my only hope was that your LA Pen Show report is as extensive and as picture-heavy and as detailed as it usually is.

I fee I didn't miss out on anything, to the contrary, I was privy to things I normally wouldn't be if I was physically there, for example when you were called up to to the room upstairs for some back-channel wheeling and dealing.

I'll try to make it to the Post LA pen Posse this sunday, hope to see you all there.

A question…. There was a table down towards the end of the large room, on the right side. They sold italic nibs for Vanishing Points; I meant to get back to them but never did. Does anyone know who they were or how to contact them, please?

Thanks!

Thanks for posting all the photos. All the shows I've been to have been on this side of the country (DC, Ohio, and -- finally this year -- Commonwealth).

It was interesting to realize that I was seeing some familiar faces, so I really now feel like I'm a bit of an insider. And that photo of Tim on page 1 of the thread? I bought a pen from him at Ohio in November (I didn't recognize him so much as the sign behind him with the color codes for the tags ): the blue Parker Laidtone with the oblique *and* semi-flex nib, which is just awesome to write with.

I was there (Sunday, from about 1 PM to about 4 PM), and I brought a friend along (elderly overweight bald guy, dressed in green, wearing a flat cap). I said hello to a few familiar faces, and did a lot of window-shopping.

I looked for a replacement inner cap to fit my red demo M200 to no avail. Discussed the problem with a number of dealers; one of them gave me a GLOWING recommendation to see Sherrell and Joel about it; the cap shell, clip, nut, and broken inner cap are now in their hands, along with the story of how it came to be in its present condition.

Then my friend and I talked out on the sidewalk, next to our cars, for another hour, about pens, about Linotypes, about a mutual friend who'd almost lost a thumb in a Linotype accident a few weeks ago, and about dirty jokes.

I really need my work to do a better job coordinating my west coast trips around pen shows.

Do you think the relatively fewer shows west of the Mississippi increases the quality and quantity of stuff up for sale or trade?

Yep, Ricky – looking from the main entrance. She was on the right side, maybe one or two tables from the end wall (Susan and John's wall), against the right wall. She had a small selection of VP nibs that had been altered, and I kicked myself for not getting one of the italic ones.

Many thanks! I hope you might be able to come up with her name!

Carmen! Are you the person who was selling altered Vanishing Point nibs? If so, you had a wonderfully smooth italic one. I need to check my VPs, but I think I might want to order one from you.

We could do this via email if you prefer. My email is ninoknechtel@gmail.com.

Well, I don't know if she had more than one at the show, but Carmen sold me an amazing faceted black VP with the smooth clip and put an italic nib in it that had been ground by Letta Grosekemper. This pen is silly good, remarkable, a real treat!

And, to tag-team my previous post, I want to thank Ricky again for his efforts to cover all of this and report it in such a vibrant and thorough way. I hope new users will look at these photos and feel a strong urge to look for a pen show somewhere near them. There really isn't anything like it, except to experience it in person.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
