Thanks for the good review. I have the Hero 565 and it is a very comfortable pen to write with.

Hi, can you repost the eBay link please? As it's embedded in the jpg, I can't use it.... Thanks.

Don't worry, I've found it now. In your review you say it has a medium nib. All the ones I've found on eBay seem to have fine nibs, which are no use to me. Are you able to point me to one with a medium (or better still, a broad) nib?

Hi, I bought all these pens in China local e-market and some from local shops and got them as such. No idea about the ebay ones. but like to suggest that ask the vendor to change to medium nib and send. They should be able to do so as these HERO nibs are quite freely available in China locally.Best regards and good luck.

I opened the tines a bit on my pen and ground the nib into a flat. That helped mine write like a medium.

My 565 arrived today. It's quite a smart looking pen and I find it writes very well straight out of the box (well, wrapper, actually), with a fine/medium line.

One thing is puzzling me though. I read descriptions that this is the 'Chinese PFM'. Now I've never owned a PFM, but I have owned a Legacy, and I was under the impression that they were much the same size. The 565 is considerably smaller than a Legacy, more the size of an Imperial. Perhaps fractionally wider, but not by very much. Unless my eyes (and memory) are deceiving me? I'm not unhappy as such, as the cost was no more than an average bottle of ink and, as I say, it writes well enough.....

Aysedasi,

"Chinese PFM" and such nicknames are pretty much just that: the 565 might have some stylistic cues from the PFM, while mechanically similar to the myriads of Chinese hooded-nib pens. I have a GS original, bought used and restored, and it's a very solid performer, and I would be surprised if the "continued production" version by Hero is less satisfactory.

No, I am not going to list my pens here.

Interesting. The Hero 565 is one of my favorite pens. I like the thicker section and the arrow helps find the sweet spot quickly unlike my 616.

About a year ago I purchased a few at $3.99 and 4 for $12 as I recall. All I see on ebay now is the Golden Star at $19 or more!

I agree. It's a ludicrously good writer. I've got a black one and have ordered a green and a maroon. I've also been asked to bget a black one for a colleague. There is one seller offering a box of 15 of them for less than $68. (Hero labelled). There are lots of the Hero versions for $5.99 too.

Ok, so the birds woke me early at 5am again and I ended up getting one at $5.99 on your recommendation.

Now tell me, how do you go about changing the nibs on these - surely you can't pull these nibs from the front as there is hardly anything to get hold of?

I would recommend following method for dismantling. Soak overnight in water with a soft detergent like Amway LOC. Just prior to dismantling soak the section in moderately hot water say 50 to 60 degree for five minutes. Dry up and Use two small pieces of rubber sheet eg bicycle tube material and twist open. It works OK and that is how I do it. If the water is hotter easier it becomes to open but there is chance that the plastic surface will lose its shine. Should that happen , polish the surface later with 3M one step paste or similar preparation. Hope this helps.

One thing I suppose that could clarify the relation between the Hero 565 and Gold Star 565 is a very simple fact that Gold Star was fully acquired by Hero late 90's / early 2000's and thus all its assets also. The 565 thus was reborn with a new branding and fortunately for us consumer now its manufactured in a different factory without worrying about aging and at a lower price .. I have both and they are essentially the same pen with just different marking. The Hero 565 and 330 are my 2 goto pen for vintage hooded nib. They just write and write well. A couple of them I've exchange the barrel for a crafted wooden ones.

GaryC, yes you change the nib by pulling it out from the front. Sure there are not much to get hold onto, but with some care ( try to tape the nib for fear of damage and grab it with a small plier or nail clipper and just slowly surely pull it straight. It can be done, just need some patience time

Nice review for a pen I just recently rediscovered.

Yes and they are nice writers i have them both , Hero 565 and Golden Star 565 !

I love Fountain Pens, with hooded nib in the classic style, Parker 51/61 type .

My only complaint with these is that they dry out. Any tips to seal them better??

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
