Operation Exterminate Bsb Stains

I used to have a cheap Chinese demonstrator with a hooded nib to use BSB in. I didn't care if it got stained -- I wasn't going to put anything else in the pen. Sadly, I broke the cap finial off when the clip got caught on the elastic in a pen case. Not sure whether it would be okay (I should actually check to see if I thought there was too much evaporation/leakage with the screws from the finial still inside the cap, because the pen I bought to be the replacement BSB pen (a Noodler's FPC) didn't control the ink well enough and I had bad feathering issues. Gonna try using a Charlie pen because I could control the dilution rate a bit better, but now I'm thinking about that other pen again....

It also might be worth trying that new light-reactive epoxy I've seen advertised; the pen is pretty much toast otherwise, (and I can't do more harm to the cap than I've already done -- Superglue didn't work...). And for a pen that cost me $5 US, what the heck....

Back on topic, I seem to recall seeing a thread several years ago in which someone said that Quink Black was good for cleaning stains from other inks. So you might try that as well as Doyou and Noodler's Eel Red (Rattler? I've never tried any of the Eel series).

Can you divorce him a second time without having to marry him again?

Good idea.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I'm gonna be frank and say that I really enjoy the blue barrel color! It looks pretty and I would get a pen that comes like that.

I have to agree, the blue stained barrel looks rather nice.

It is kind of pretty. I wish it were more consistent.

I don't think you can get them any more, but there was a model of the Vac 700 with a barrel just that colour.

I think you need to pull it apart, soak the whole thing in BSB, and then she'll be right, mate.

I had one of the blue, it was a little different.

Maybe I'll send this to you for a little visit.

What happened to Rattlers Red as a cleaning agent?

I promised DCWaites that I would no longer make him wait when he sent me an ink to try. So, this one got the first crack.

I have a Jinhao coming back also stained with BSB (same ex husband), and I'm going to try the Rattler Red on it. I think someone will come forward with a third BSB pen and we can try Sailor Do You on it.

OK, I understand.

I just thought that perhaps RR had lost it's magical properties overnight.

I remember they discontinued it a while ago, right when I wanted one. I think it was a much darker color though.

Now I HAVE to find out what happened!

To the Sapphire Vac 700s or to my ex-husband?

I guess you can lend the evol ex another pen... So you'll have a third BSB-stained pen. :D

While that's one way to accomplish it, I'm just sort of hesitant. I can't imagine why.

Alternatively, Amber could only go for All Matt Black pens. If BSB can stain those, it is truly magic.

Ok, Vlad, where did you get that cleaner? Is it safe for the rest of the pen?

As for the rest of the experiment, the goal is to see if another ink really will remove stains. :)

Just fill a glass of water, a few drops of bleach, a drop of dishwasher fluid, mix well and fill the pen. Rinse when the stains disappear. And sue your ex!! :D

  • 3 months later...

I will upload pictures this week. the stains are GONE. I didn't even get a chance to show the process because Evol kept refiling. He moved on from Quink with Solv-X to vintage Sheaffer's Blue Black. You can't tell the pen was ever stained.

Dang. You are a great friend!   One comment as a relative newcomer would be within the cleaning section: issues/differences in cleaning vacuum filler, piston filler in addition to cartridge/converter. I just cleaned out my Pilot 823 and while it wasn't particularly difficult I was a little paranoid about the drops of water that I could not get out. Perhaps this is something you are already including.   Anyway, great project and very thoughtful of you. I know it's a project fo

Hi Smug Dill,   Nice project.  If it were me, I'd cover stuff like: - nib types available, i.e. styles, materials (SS vs gold), flex vs nails; - filling systems (I love the "thingie" comment) and how once can use them in practice (e.g. fill cartridges with a syringe); - pen body materials and their consequences (pen not balanced of too heavy and big for the hand); - and, whilst you've made it clear that you do not like vintage pens, a discussion of these beyond "I d

Thanks for your input! Yes, not putting wood in the list of body materials warranting a mention was an oversight. I love pens with wooden bodies, but my main concern, or chagrin, is that I have not come across a wooden-bodied pen with a wooden cap that seals well. Actually, there is one, but it isn't really wood per se: the Pilot Custom Kaede's maple body is resin impregnated. All other wooden pens I have can dry out while capped and undisturbed; that includes several Platinum #3776 models.

That looks pretty good. You might want to add wood as a material (with its weakness of staining) and mention urushi. And under ergonomic considerations, the size of section (slender pens vs chunky pens), and shape of section, and 'disturbances' such as the Lamy 2000 'ears' and Pilot Capless clip getting in the way might be worth mentioning. Also possibly a general section on things you can do yourself with a bit of care, with a bit of practice, and things that are strictly "don't try this a
