Operation Exterminate Bsb Stains

Recommended Posts

As several of you have followed the tests performed by LGSoltek and myself about getting stains out of pens, I thought I'd give it a try with a TWSBI stained with my beloved Bay State Blue. I'll try and add the links in the coming days to show off the results of other inks and pens, and I'll repeat this experiment with some other pens that have been stained by BSB, but for now, here is the story.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

So, after an attempt to clean the pen, when EvoL returned the pen, I could not get the pump to move. As you can see this is a pentastrophy and a prime example of why you should not share pens with people who don't understand pens.

He broke the cap first, which is how the ink dried out.

Somehow, he broke the feed. Now, don't blame the ink because I've never had this happen with any of my other pens or my TWSBIs. Blame the ex husband (that's what I usually do). :P

The lovely folks at TWSBI worked on it for me. I could have paid for a new barrel, and I offered to let them keep it as a warning to others, but instead, they fixed it up and returned it to me with a new feed and a new cap. Everything else is original.

Now, the barrel is really stained. The last ink in it was BSB, but Akkerman Shocking blue had already left it's blue trail.

Oh my.

What did this poor pen do to incur such wrath?

I'm going to use that sample of Doyou that you sent me on the Lamy that's just as stained.

The pen was the victim of a newbie. I had it inked with BSB and it was great.

EvoL ex husband borrowed it and fell in love. He used all my ink. So, I cleaned it out and had it inked with Shocking blue. He didn't like Shocking Blue because it wasn't as "shocking" as BSB, so he cleaned it and then inked it with my thankfully small bottle of BSB. (He may have contaminated the ink and caused a chemical reaction.)

He returned it to me broken and dried out in January 2016 (7 months later). Nevertheless, we will have a great time thanking the nice Folks at TWSBI and a great time enjoying our experiments.

So this is Operation Exterminate BSB? Excellent. Calling all wizards, mages, druids, ink-wise men/women, united confederation of ink-stain terminators, etc... what sort of hocus pocus do you have to efficiently remove stains?

I'm gonna be frank and say that I really enjoy the blue barrel color! It looks pretty and I would get a pen that comes like that.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
