As the very proud new owner of a Blue Sakura done with Tomoe River paper, I can without hesitation say that TMLee's work is amazing! If you want a custom journal, he's the place to go!

Excuse me while I go stare at my precious and know I am unworthy to write in her..

This is JOURNAL 207B (A5) YUSEN - Cranes II made on order .

A5 size

My 62nd TR Journal.

and my 13th A5 TR journal.

The print design of the cranes was just too beautiful.

It was ideal for both the corner and the spine accent becos the covers are large enough to accomodate such a layout.

The accents (jet black bookcloth) were ideal to make the cranes 'pop' visually.

A bright chinese red was ideal to bring out the red dots on the crane design.

It contrasted well with the black bookcloth.

This is 209 YUSEN - Plovers made on order too .

Another stunning Japanese print.

This design carries a popular Japanese bird motif - plovers .

Apparently the birdcall it makes , resembles the Japanese word for longevity, hence its adoption as an auspicious symbol.

Plovers like to flock in large numbers on sandbars , so the composition looks like large flocks of plovers over swathes of sandbars amidst the blue sea.

The waves are rendered in gold outlines.

The entire composition is pretty , more fascinating when it catches light at glancing angles.

Very nice

I went for a blue schema to keep colours to a minimum, much so like the Blue Sakura YUSEN paper.

Blue flyleaves and blue threads.

I couldnt wait to craft a variant of the plovers , with spine and corner accents ...

( compared against a fully covered one ... )

Superflat turned in corners after clamping overnight ...

As usual, the cover paper dives under the bookcloth.

The end result is that the bookcloth is flushed on the same level as the paper cover.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/209%20YUZEN%20Plovers/209A%20A5%20YUZEN%20Plovers/015_zps7k98adnx.jpg

I decided to try gold coloured flyleaves instead ...

to match the gold on the cover design ...

a nice same shade of gold ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/209%20YUZEN%20Plovers/209A%20A5%20YUZEN%20Plovers/001%202_zpstv4aox86.jpg

But alas !

I dont have gold threads :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

The threads can either recede into the background , like blue threads ,

or stand out in contrast , like white threads, which also helps to tie the whole composition together ...

At the moment , I am leaning towards white ...

I am confident it will turn out more than decent-looking ... :D

This journal hasn't been spoken for yet.

So if you are interested in acquiring this journal , just PM me. :D

Its A5 size.

Writing paper of your choice, since its not stitched ... - yet. :D

CLAMPING ON BOOKBANDS

This tip addresses the practical problem of using thickish elastic bands.

The book bands are nice, but they are thick and can't be compressed , unlike the more common kinds of elastic bands. (eg, like those thinner bands used on mole*kines)

These book bands remain as thick as about 1.2 to 1.5mm thick even after clamping/compressing them flat.

This thickness poses a problem if you are using such book bands and incorporating them within your book covers.

For what I am doing, in my journals, I was trying to figure out how to solve this problem of getting the flyleaves moulded around the bookbands.

I tried an earlier solution with pieces of greyboards hugging the bookbands that are sandwiched between the flyleaves and the coverboard. But it didnt work well.

I decided to make a template to purpose-fit around the book bands.

This is what it looks like

Front

Its made of of layers of card glued together to reach a thickness equal to the bookbands.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/002_zps774x8p23.jpg

Here is the backside

The entire card template is mounted onto a thin plastic sheet to hold everything in position.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/003_zpsblbj8ge6.jpg

This pic shows how It fits onto the cover with the bookband like so ...

Here you see the blue bookbands

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/005_zps5s2flm2u.jpg

Closeup

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/008_zpsa4sxypye.jpg

Now this is the other template to deal with the remaining side of the cover carrying the bookband.

Slots are cut out , to accomodate the ends of the bookband.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/004_zpspsdkhzsw.jpg

Here it shows how they fit into position

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/007_zpsoq1il79o.jpg

Here the gold flyleaves are glued onto the cover.

Then the template - front and back - are placed into position.

Here you see the back template in position

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/012_zpsw0vopasq.jpg

Here you see the other side,

where the cardboard template is placed into position

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/014_zps6ow9fzkf.jpg

Now the entire contraption (both sides) is then carefully padded with foam sheets (blue in colour)

and then clamped overnight

By morning, the clamping boards are removed , and the technique of cardboard templates seem to work

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/015_zpspuojjiup.jpg

The flyleaves appear to hug the bookbands much neater and tighter.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/BOOKBINDING/CLAMPING%20ELASTIC%20BANDS%20IN%20POSITION/016_zps5nfecjpr.jpg

More importantly, the coverboards remain flat , they dont get deformed.

This same pic, you can see the coverboards stay flat throughout.

My earlier journals using bookbands suffered some deformity due to the bookbands causing uneven clamping. :(

Nice

Must be fun, attending the workshop . :)

Thank you. Yes, it was fun. We made two books, a box and a pamphlet. I recently picked up a nipping press that I'm re-finishing.

Hi, I really like your handmade journal designs. So I just want to ask how much do you usually ask for B5 sized, with regular thickness/pages, journal?

(I couldn't follow your link to the classified, it just come up as error)

Thank you , PM sent to you.

Yes I must apologize for my classifieds.

I find it cumbersome to upkeep it.

All data is lost when it expires ...

There are more efficient means of putting things up for sale , but alas I am hopeless in these kinds of things. :(

The insignia was not intricate and it seemed an emboss was quite do-able, so I decided to try ...

It came out quite nicely, positioned on exactly the same place where its printed on the rear flyleaf ...

Great vacation stuff! Is that a tree frog? I like unusual pen rests, and this qualifies +++ And, the emu tracks are cool.

Edit to add, did you visit the Powerhouse Museum?

not sure what kind of frog , but its made of bronze by a reknowned artist. Pete & Louise Smit at their Queensland foundry, using the 3000 year old Lost Wax Process.

Thats what the flyer says . probably more info can be googled.

This piece was signed by Pete Smit.

There is a bigger similar matching frog more to life size.

Very nice too. But I didn't buy it.

I must give this froggie a name ... :)

We stayed near the Powerhouse museum and passed it quite a few times but unfortunately no, we missed visiting it. :-(

A good old friend did this for me ...

excellent art skills she has ...

i am not sure what this craft is called , paper cutting ?

Some works are really unbelievably detailed ...

I've always been fascinated with the sea creature Nautilus.

That combined with the famous Fibonacci principle , really amazes me ....

Anyway , this was the end result ...

The paper i reckon is about 100g.

Thicker paper makes cutting more difficult to execute.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/JOURNAL%20IDEAS/NAUTILUS/DSCF5007_zps3zghnp60.jpg

I asked for something that could fit into A5 covers...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/JOURNAL%20IDEAS/NAUTILUS/DSCF5004_zpsfi0wejti.jpg

One cover will be embossed , so the other cover will carry the deboss.

Now I am wondering what material to cover over?

I am not sure of bookcloth.

whether it will bring out the beauty of the cut.

This emboss is thin and I am not sure if bookcloth is best.

I am exploring paper.

with graduated colours ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/JOURNAL%20IDEAS/NAUTILUS/DSCF5005_zpsrhle0xrc.jpg

I am not sure , looks a bit too much.

Then again ...

The Nautilus will occupy only 3 colour tones like so ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/JOURNAL%20IDEAS/NAUTILUS/DSCF5006_zpss6h4jdh9.jpg

Maybe a plain black to white paper may be more subtle ... :glare: ?

Ideas anyone ?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
    • A Smug Dill
Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
