  • 1 year later...

My tiny haul from JPN 2023 Dec.

I visited Ozu Washi in Tokyo .

A very old shop since 1653 !!!!!!!!

These are the variants of tombows.

I didnt know they have other color variants other than black backgrd and red backgrd.

The colors here on my monitor dont look accurate, but trust me they are beautiful.

From left to Right:

Olive drab , Bright Persimmon , Teal (my fave) and black

all the tombow motifs are embossed (raised) and lacquered 👍.

I hope to start (resume) crafting soon.

Its been a long hiatus.

DSCF0392.JPG.d5b1956bdbcd21ac45d63246f4197f4a.JPG

I have explained before that Tombows are a familiar Japanese motif because of the meaning it symbolises. Tombows (dragonflies) symbolise change - becos they go thru a very dramatic metamorphosis.

Dramatic change --- and we all hope , a change for the better, good changes.

You all are very dear to me , even though we are virtual friends, I dont even know what you look like ! 😄

I guess its my way of saying I need a hug. 😌

The Teal (turquoise) variant.

I think I like this one the most out of the lot.

This is the Olive Drab variant ...

The black tombow is also embossed

These are chika , a familiar Japanese bird motif.

I remembered I had this in a printed kind of washi (I forget what is the correct term)

These both are lacquered embossed, the one on the left seems to be in a colour very like glow in the dark kind of color.DSCF0390.JPG.9074606d0106c0c6c88be176abf74285.JPG

This two they say are handmade, but I am not sure how and in what manner.

They cost just a little more.

Striped .

I wonder how to use these on covers?

(the vertical stripes seem to restrict the way they can be used)

Maybe I shld do something radical?

This one is stunning...

also embossed and lacquered ...

the flowers are larger sized

I was thinking only A5 large journals are suitable, but then again, just experiment, think out of the box.DSCF0389.JPG.a42e1b0210e94f0066afcc6d10ec87a0.JPG

Here is a virtual hug. I have missed you here, and look forward to resuming our exchanges when you start crafting again.

I actually have imposed a moratorium on notebook buying, but I am going to break it to get some of these beauties from you.

Sight unseen, please make me a set of 4, small ones, with covers from these new ones. You choose. You know my paper preference, but if you cannot get that, I'll be happy with whatever you provide. How's that for a virtual hug?

Love the chopstick rests.  A few years ago, I had been trying to find nice ones like those (not as pen rests -- just because it would be nice to have chopstick rests for when we do takeout) only they were not to be had ANYWHERE that I could find (I pretty much hit every Oriental grocery in the greater Pittsburgh area -- even the place I got my husband a really nice large wok for Christmas one year let me down :().

And of course, that was pre-COVID....  And pre-"supply chain issues".... :wallbash:

found this image on Pinterest years ago.

and i was mistaken, its the cactus which needed a hug.

(plants , including cactus, need tender loving care)

i had thot the porcupine needed a hug.

i guess it works both ways … 😄

and whaddyah know, i just realized someone thanked me with a gift (late last nite) of a small cactus , you know, the tiny potted ones that you put at a window sill….
what a coincidence !

😄

Great story TM, and yes, what do you know - cactus grow everywhere here, I even have some in my back yard... including a beautiful one, that blooms, with great white flowers, in the night and very early morning, that I've actually planted. We call those dama di anochi, which means lady of the night... Hopefully it posts well and you can see what they look like. The plant itself has thorns and is a cactus so advisable to love from a slight distance... but this grew from a small cutting a neighbor gave me many years ago.

Lady of the Night or Queen of the Night?
it only blooms at the stroke of midnight.

and when i was young, we actually stayed up to check and indeed, it was full bloom but only at around midnight !
and the scent was overpowerimg, very sweet and filled the entire house.

remarkable flower.

really amazing !

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
