PIERCING YOUR SIGNATURES

These days , I now pierce my Signatures using a DIY piercing template.

The advantages of using a piercing template is that your stations (holes) line up nicely.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2015/204%20FPD2015/204C%20FPD2015%20GEMATEX%20Lime%20Green/New%20Picture_zpstduh0due.png

Here you see the loose Signatures placed carefully into position with the covers.

( TR paper - 7 signatures, 10 Folios each)

this is the stage where I then next mark the holes to be pierced on the covers .

When placing the bookblock in this manner, I have to do it several times to get it right.

I learnt this from other forum ...

the head of the book - ie, the top of your book - which here in this pic is on the upper left - must be perfectly level.

When you shelve the book, it becomes obvious if the head of the signatures are all not aligned, shoulder to shoulder.

The tail of the book, ie, the bottom opposite end , is not so important.

When shelved, the eye is never drawn to the bottom of the books, always to the top of the books.

The journals I craft, are made from A4 paper which needs to be cut by hand in half to arrive at the A6 size folios and signatures that I need.

No matter how accurate, its not perfect becos its cut by hand.

This means some signatures are taller than the other and so forth.

Hence, the need to ensure the head of your book is as level as possible.

You will have an easier time if your paper is pre-cut by machine.

This is why my A5 journals look alot better becos there is no need to cut the A4 papers.

This is a sample of a DIY piercing template.

Made from good quality card (from high quality printed magazines)

The print is beautiful and the shades of blues are very close in tone ...

This is JOURNAL 232 YUSEN Black Lacquer - Cranes completed.

A6 size

This paper is unique.

Its not only embossed (the crane motifs in red) but its also lacquered.

It presents some working challenges.

The lacquer is sensitive to moisture, and the surface tends to stick when conditions are overly damp.

But its too beautiful to resist.

Kind friends went the extra mile to buy them for me at my request.

And true to the laws of the universe, Murphy is still very much alive and kicking, and becos of him these papers almost didn't make it back home to me. :D

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/YUSEN%20RED%20LACQUER/232%20YUSEN%20BLACK%20LACQUER%20Cranes/DSCF3748_zpsgetesic9.jpg

I chose black bookbands to allow the reds to pop.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/YUSEN%20RED%20LACQUER/232%20YUSEN%20BLACK%20LACQUER%20Cranes/DSCF3754_zps0egvhckt.jpg

The YUSEN paper dives under the bookcloth.

The end product is that the surface is flushed.

The bookcloth edge is not exposed to abrasions.

This is JOURNAL 232A YUSEN Black Lacquer - Cranes

A6 size

This is the matching half of 232 above.

Whatever that is cut out along the spine is planted here on this one in the same exact position.

The main covering is Jet Black bookcloth .

plain bookcloths are deceptively challenging to employ. The slightest glue stains shows up really clearly.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/YUSEN%20RED%20LACQUER/232%20YUSEN%20BLACK%20LACQUER%20Cranes/001_zpsixiz4rz7.jpg

The matte finish of the bookcloth is noticeably different from the semi-gloss of the YUSEN lacquered paper.

This made me next explore the possibility of a gloss black material to match the gloss of the YUSEN.

I managed to find a certain black paper that would come close to match the gloss of the black on the YUSEN paper.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/YUSEN%20RED%20LACQUER/233%20MAPLE%20LEAVES/DSCF3874_zpse6h1ufts.jpg

(this is done on the matching half)

This is the underside which is also black and this is most advantageous.

This means that the edge of the paper is also black and this is important for what I am doing for the spine (and corner) accents which have certain portions where the edges are exposed to view.

It makes a noticeable difference compared to say paper that is white but has a black coating , somewhat like poster paper. Its edges are white, not black.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/YUSEN%20RED%20LACQUER/233%20MAPLE%20LEAVES/DSCF3876_zpsg6ugoe7u.jpg

This is the 2nd out of 4 YUSEN Black Lacquer papers in my possession.

Maple leaves - my favourite !

Very stunning , visually ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/YUSEN%20RED%20LACQUER/233%20MAPLE%20LEAVES/DSCF3878_zpspeg2dbow.jpg

Here in preparation to receive the black spine embossed accents.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/YUSEN%20RED%20LACQUER/233%20MAPLE%20LEAVES/DSCF3881_zpsdwxydrjc.jpg

continuing the concept of a matched pair.

The decision to do so , was becos of the smallish size of the motifs - here the maple leaves , and in the earlier example - the cranes.

Its fine enough to be used as accents on the spine like this ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/YUSEN%20RED%20LACQUER/233%20MAPLE%20LEAVES/DSCF3885_zpskku4vgza.jpg

Here you see the big advantage of the black paper having black edges.

You also see that the black paper reveals the maple leaves underneath it.

You can see the emboss of the maple leaves underneath the black paper.

The embossed part (trapezoid shapes) remains plain (untextured) , enhancing the contrast in textures.

The YUSEN paper dives under the black paper.

This is to protect the black paper edge from abrasions and eventually getting snagged.

Its one solution to the common occurrence of papers getting snagged where they overlap one another on hardbacks.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/YUSEN%20RED%20LACQUER/233%20MAPLE%20LEAVES/DSCF3888_zpsnrezuasd.jpg

Beautiful emboss of the maple leaves ...

the imprint of the maple leaves continue underneath the black paper

The lesson here , if you are attempting emboss/deboss , pay close attention to textures - they can and do show up !!!

Whatever that is underneath , is equally important to the finished end result.

the gloss of the YUSEN paper vs the gloss of the spine accent black paper.

compare this effect with the earlier example of the crane journals...

Very 'Japanesey' , you can just place this next to traditional japanese black & red lacquerware.

Perfect !

Or place a NAKAYA black red or red black FP next to it.(sorry i dont have one)

Sweet !

I came upon this link when checking back to the the Platinum Century 3776 PIF thread where Pen2Paper very kindly gifted to me this journal, hand-made by T M Lee. The pics are great, however, to have this carefully & artistically made journal in one's hand is marvelous. IrishEyes is so right, I love my new journal 😊.

After seeing how Renée's pen complements the journal, I may have to think of getting one simuliar 😊.

If members are interested in a really nice journal just go to Classifieds & check out these. To T M Lee, thank you for posting pics of the work - in - progress.

I'd like to repeat the " thank-you " to Pen2Paper that I shared in the PIF thread, for the " Aggie / Reveille " journal.

Finding & affixing our faithful mascot, Reveille, was muchly appreciated. Reveille is with me each day while Journaling.

When I followed the link here I'd no idea that I would see the beautiful journal with the black and red color scheme, which I thought lovely, how original!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
