Forestchoice Review...pro And Con

During my ongoing search for the ideal insert to fill the "fauxdori" travelers notebook I'm making, ForestChoice landed on the radar. Here are the final conclusions, for anyone considering new notebooks.

ForestChoice Small Flex Notebook

3 1/2" x 5 1/2"

80 pages (lines, grid, or plain)

70gsm, soft cream color paper

Acid free, FSC certified (FSC = Forest Stewardship Council)

Pro column:

  • Smooth, luxurious paper surface; a joy to write on
  • Brings out shading
  • Ink colors remain true
  • No noticeable feathering
  • Stitched binding, taped outer spine (durable)
  • Nice, stiff kraft cardstock cover
  • Same price as Field Notes (which I despise for fountain pen use)

Con column:

  • Slow to dry, but I'm planning to keep a J. Herbin blotting paper insert in the travelers journal as a bookmark anyway
  • Show through is the significant (drats)
  • Doesn't want to lie flat--need to hold open with one hand while writing with the other (true for nearly all, except the slightly taller Leuchtturm)
  • Not sold in many places (I found them on pencils.com, on sale)

Overall, I really like this notebook; just wish show through wasn't such a problem.

Photos to help visualize my experience....

Here's the show through:

Overall, I really like the writing experience, but doubt I'll use this on trips---just can't afford to tote around anything that allows only 50% of the writing surface to be used.

Oh well!

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...??? : : : sigh : : :

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

I took one to Florida with me a couple of months ago and I liked the experience. I use a brown ink, and a nib on the fine side. I dry ink and a small nib and you're good.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
