Looking For A New Ig Ink

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Akkerman #10 yet. It's well behaved and while it may be made by Diamine it does not resemble Diamine Registrars in the slightest, oxidizing quite dark (the sample I had of the Diamine Registrar's oxidized to a washy grey -- the phenomenal shading was about all that could be said for it).

If you want more than a blue-black IG ink though, the KWZI inks I've tried have been good (there were a few for which I didn't like the final color, but that's just me).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I would have mentioned Akkerman Ijzer-galnoten blauw/zwart # 10, an "old" favourite, but I guess my mind was still in that old time when Akkerman inks were not easily available.

My first two large bottles were on group buys.

I've forgotten that this lovely IG ink is available from Vanness (no affiliation) in the USA, though in a smaller 60 ml. bottle.

I agree Ruth, about the difference (when fully oxidized) between Akkerman # 10 & Diamine Registrars.

Registrars, in my wide edged nibs, seems to become almost black. In fact, I use it as a substitute for black.

The Chesterfield Archival Vault that I most frequently use is a dark black when oxidized, but I was not really looking for another IG ink that looks black when it is done doing its thing.

I did seriously consider KWZ IG ink, but in the end the cost including shipping was more than I wanted to pay for ink that I had not ever seen or tried in person. Their colors look quite nice, so I may end up taking a gamble on them in the future anyway, but I'm not big on having tons of inks sitting around on my desk.

I have absolutely no connection with Vanness Pens -- I'm not even a customer, yet -- but Vanness Pens does seem to sell KWZ ink samples, as well as bottles.

I've been using a lot of KWZ inks lately, and I can only rave about them: the KWZ iron gall inks that I've used perform very well and are easy to clean. The ones I've used have also been fairly wet-flowing, as opposed to traditional iron gall inks, which I love but which tend to be dry. My favorite right now is KWZ Iron Gall Blue #5, which is one of the nicest blue inks I've ever used. And I've used dozens and dozens of blue inks; I mean, I have a blue ink problem. But possibly not any more. :)

Here's a link to my review, just to give a better idea of the color. It's not a traditional blue black, but more of a dark standard blue. But there are a lot of KWZ iron gall inks from which to choose if that's not for you.

I am intrigued by KWZ ink, but the shipping costs charged by Vanness make ordering samples or even single bottles of ink cost prohibitive. If I were to place a larger order then it would be worth it, but Vanness just doesn't have anything else that I am interested in.

................... but the shipping costs charged by Vanness...................

You are at least in the States. I'm north of the Border.

Try the shipping costs to Canada. Paid in USD.

However, If I need the very occasional bottle of Akkerman ink, I just bite the bullet & order from Vanness. For me, availability trumps price (shipping & all).

The only difference between ESSRI and Diamine Registrar's is the flow. ESSRI is a little bit less dry, and thus a little bit more prone to show-through on *very* poor paper (not an issue on copier paper or better). After a few days of drying, I don't see any difference in color.

jabberwock11 - i could send you a sample of KWZ IG Gummiberry and the IG Turquoise if you would like to try them. Only thing I ask is that you return the sample bottles or a least two empty usable sample bottles.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
