Fog Grey - De Atramentis

De Atramentis is german manufacturer of calligraphy and writing ink. The inks are hand made (the entire production process is done manually in their manufacturing center) by i's founder - Dr. Franz-Josef Jensen. I believe he uses high quality dyes from well established European companies like BASF and Bayer.

Fog Grey is very nice grey ink with excellent flow. It tends to feather (slightly) on bad quality papers. I'll get a bottle of this one.

Thanks for the review. I like it, too, so on my list it goes.

Thanks for another great review! I have this ink and like it a lot - but I think that of the inks I use it's the one that varies most according to the type and colour of paper I'm using. I find that on very white papers it looks best - it can look pretty uninspiring on ivory or cream coloured paper. I especially like the blue notes in the grey - but again, that depends a lot on the paper.

Very nice review, Vis. I picked up a bottle of this ink a couple months ago and have enjoyed it immensely...a nice alternative to black or blue black in a professional setting.

Thanks for the review. I had tried a sample of Fog Grey a while back, and I liked it, but have a slight preference for De Atramentis Silver Grey.

I really like this Fog Grey ink. Although it looks rather greenish on this monitor I am using, in actual use it is a very nice shade of blue grey. It reminds me of the color of clouds at dusk or of fog over the ocean. A really lovely shade of ink, IMHO, and in my experience it was well-behaved even on relatively cheap composition book paper.

DeATramentis also has an archival/document ink version of the Fog Grey which is quite waterproof; I haven't tried it, however.

Thank you for the review, visvamitra; I hope it inspires others to try out this very nice ink.

Holly

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
