Alternative To Maruman Mnemosyne Word Cards

I understand that Maruman Mnemosyne Word Cards, used by many to catalog fountain pen inks, are no longer available. Does anyone know of an alternative?

I have a spare (new) set of 100 but you'd have to pay shipping from the UK, which would probably make them far too expensive?

I believe (from another thread) that Daiso and Muji do word cards, though I've never used them. I bought some Life Japan ones, but have yet to use them.

I was once a bottle of ink, Inky Dinky Thinky Inky, Blacky Minky Bottle of Ink!

Are these readily available in the U.K.? Might add them to my shopping list for the April/May birthday trip....

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...??? : : : sigh : : :

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

As they're discontinued by Maruman they are probably getting hard to find here as well.

That's what Goulet and JetPens said, but they're still listed on the Maruman website as a current item:

If I can get my hands on some while overseas, well...that would be divine.

You might be lucky then. My previous UK stockist told me they couldn't get hold of them anymore and the alternative supplier I used is also showing Out of Stock.

Penstore has them in stock and they mail to the UK.

So if anyone in the US wants a pack but can't find them, and could bear to wait until May, I would be happy to buy some and bring them with me to mail within the US. :)

According to my calculations, based on 5 packs, they will cost $8 per pack plus whatever it costs to mail them in the US.

I've bought from Penstore in the Netherlands and shipping to the UK (if the order is less than €50) adds about €10 to an order of 4 sets of cards, which are €4.95 each. If you then add postage to forward within the US, it's probably cheaper to buy an alternative.

Do you mean The Pen Shop? Or is there another called "Penstore?" Can't find anything about the latter online (I'm looking for locations to hit during my May visit to Glasgow and Dublin).

Penstore is in the Netherlands so kind of irrelevant to your visit. I don't think it'll be easy to track down Mnemosyne cards in the UK now.

I contacted Maruman this morning about Mnemosyne word cards.

This was their reply:

Thank you very much for your inquiry about our product, W190.

Unfortunately, W190 has been discontinued last year. It has been already
sold out. There are no replacements at this moment.

Drats.

Wish they'd remove it from their website---one's heart goes pitter patter when thinking there's still hope..... :crybaby:

Thanks for the update, Chrissy.

I saw on the Anderson Pens blog that they've completely redone their ink sample cards using a card stock from a local paper manufacturer. They chose this card stock using blind tests. I encouraged them to come out with a Word Card-like product using this paper (which they coyly did not identify). I've seen so many people using the Word Cards to catalog their inks that I'd bet it would be a successful item.

Artists' tiles are a good alternative, especially heavier stock suitable for wet media & washes. Readily available.

I'm using Life index cards purchased from Jetpens. They seem fine to me, though I never used the Marumans for comparison. The come with a hole punched and I organize them on a key ring.

A hole punch and a binder ring will turn any card or paper or your choice into a handy set of word swab cards. Maybe two binder rings, depending on how many samples you have.

I purchased the Muji cards months ago, hoping they'd be a decent alternative. The paper is much too thin and curled and wrinkled with the few swabs I did attempt. It currently sits in a drawer somewhere, accompanied by my disdain. :(

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
