Deatramentis Sepia Brown

DeAtramentis makes some interesting inks, and usually they have good behavior and handling characteristics. This ink conforms in that regard. This is a very reddish-brown, it's almost to my eyes more reddish than brown. I find it hard to define as sepia, but that's what the maker calls it. I'm not much for red or reddish inks as I personally have little use for them, while brown is an ink color whose appeal is hard to deny.

You may personally really like this color. But not for me, so it's hard for me to get excited about the ink. I think the color is appearing a bit dark for the actual ink, as it seems lighter on the paper compared to the screen.

But it handles quite well. Somewhat water resistant, in that the red washes away, leaving some of the brown behind.

The usual papers appear here: MvL=Mohawk via Linen, Hij=Hammermill 28lb inkjet.

Thanks! Good review as usual. But my Sepia Brown is nowhere as red. Mine is more of a sepia as I see it, i.e. a reddish brown in any case but not that red, actually more into a gold or sand. Yours looks almost like a burgundy. In any case also with a touch of blue. Unusual for DeAs. I have quite a few and I've not yet seen any such variances in different charges.

Thanks for this information. I got this as a sample from a retailer, so it's not from a bottle where I can see the label. I wonder if they mistakenly filled the sample(s) from the wrong bottle.

Here is another review from 2012 where it seems more brownish

Here is a review from 2008.

I wonder if the formulation has changed over time.

This is, IIRC, the ink that was the subject of a contest a while back to come up with a better name. The winners were supposed to be announced the beginning of November, but apparently it was a tougher decision than anticipated (there were a LOT of good entries).

Just thought I'd drop off a fast scan to show that mine really isn't all that red.

Herbin glass dip pen on Leuchtturm.

Few drops on kitchen towel.

Sounds convincing, that stuff about the renaming contest etc.

Thanks for the scans, definitely different. Have an inky holiday and drink some good wine. :)

Thanks for the review Lotus. My bottle was completely different than your batch. I got a lighter brown red, which wet was more red, and a medium brown when dry. Actually my brown I mixed with a little black to see if I could salvage the ink. Strange batches can be completely different.

Very nice review. I really like the color, but it isn't "sepia" to me.

Last fall, Dr. J. was having a contest to rename this ink. Apparently there were two different batches. The link explains much of this.

Yes I saw the wonderful thread of winners on the naming contest and think this is a great name as it perfectly captures the color description. Thank you for the offer of a sample of the new Sepia Veritable when available. I'll definitely give it a test and review. Looking for to it.

All the best, and Happy New Year!

I thought (but nobody asked me!) 'Midnight Rose' was a more suitable name; hair the color of this ink would not be auburn.

True sepia (cuttlefish) is an ancient color; it's a warm brown but not nearly as burgundy as many versions on the market.

Thank you for another great review.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.
