Woot! I Finished Off My Icicle Collection With This Win!

I'm was betting that the bad description and poor quality photos would barely get noticed. Turned out to be a good bet! I blew the photos up as I like to do in auctions that are poorly described, and instantly recognized it as a grey icicle, the only color icicle I was missing! So I laid low, and sniped it for a mere $26 (+ shipping).

I'll post a family photo when it arrives!

I wonder what nib it has?

Nice catch, you sniper you.

My best eBay finds have been those poorly described. I recently bought a pen described such as, "I restored this pen but I don't have ink to test it so I don't know if it works." How's that for a description?

So I took a chance, and for $8.00 delivered got an Inkograph which writes perfectly. I didn't know pens could write so smoothly.

You didn't check on the nib?

I was always told to chase the nib. Of course that's how I ended up with as many mackerel J series pens in green....

Nope. Don't even care if it has a working nib. I didn't buy the pen to use, I bought it because it was the last piece of my icicle collection. And I've got spare nibs, if it should need one.

I've seen your comment about "chase the nibs, not the pens", but I'm not interested in a nib collection. I'm interested in pens that catch my eye when it comes to my collecting, the nib is irrelevant, to me.

I do have pens for writing, and those I chose because of the quality of the nib.

So for me, its a grey icicle, a pen I've been trying to buy for nearly a year to complete the icicle collection, and I got it fairly cheap, so I couldn't care less what nib it may have.

To each his own though, if that's how you like to hunt Esties, more power to you, and good luck!

Good catch. It's a hard set to do. I had four of them for a couple years before I found the copper one.

I've been looking for this grey for almost a year. Saw a few pass by, but they were overpriced for my budget. Copper was one of the first ones I acquired, but I think I just got lucky with that one too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
