Sweet Potato Purple Substitute

Having tried, and failed, many times to purchase Bungbox sweet potato purple (and never having used it) I'm wondering if there might be an ink out there that is in any way close to it?

 

I'm not a fan of bluish purples but I do like purples of a deeper red hue and this one seemed to hit the right spot for me. I've tried a few sources, missed out on the Vanness selling and ebay man from Japan has tried to locate it for me on two occasions now without any success. I feel I have know hyped it up so much in my own mind that it will likely be a huge disappointment!

This might help. There are a few inks that come close-ish in appearanc, at first glance, but I guarantee that none behave the same way on paper and certainly none come anyway near having the same crazy green-gold sheen of Sweet Potato Purple. I think you can pick up the sheen in this photo, even using my rubbish iPad camera, that for some reason went a bit blurry on me :-(

 

If I was to pick out one as an alternative, I'd go for Levenger Pomegranate. Slightly more of a brown note, but it does have some pretty sheen. Diamine Oxblood is in range, but doesn't have that certain zing, for me. Cult Pens Deep Dark red is OK - maybe diluted down a bit might bring it closer.

 

Writing Lab Old Burgundy is a real contender but I can't recommend it as it is nearly as difficult to get hold of as SPP.

There certainly is a purple variety of sweet potato; they are nicer to eat than the standard yellow variety IMO.

Looks kinda like R&K Scabiosa.

 

It's completely different to Scabiosa, at least in my experience. It has none of the grey & very different in behaviour.

That's interesting. Maybe it's the paper you're using them on that makes them look similar?

Thank you for the responses. Looks like I will need to give the Levenger Pomegranate a whirl. Sadly, Levenger's own website is out of it at the moment!

I really like Levenger Pom, it has great sheen, it's easy to clean and it's got a great price.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
