Another Casualty Of The Ebay Global Shipping Program

What *really* irks me is that now eBay UK is starting with this excremental GSP. Thankfully, my British pen chest is full to bursting and I don't have to bother with it.

But I've yet to see a UK seller state in 72 point type "SHIPPING IN UK ONLY, NO FORNERS ALLOWED".

Completely unnecessary instruction anyway. Who in their right mind would bid on this item with shipping of $58? ! I stopped buying anything from the US (Ebay) years ago due to shipping costs.

Ebay aside, their are plenty of classifieds on this site that state the same but, not in such large print.

It's fine for a seller to limit his shipping radius if he wants to. The problem with that listing, and with others I've seen lately, is that the shipping instructions say "will ship abroad" (via GSP), while the seller says "won't". It's confusing for the buyers and frustrating for the seller.

By the way, the GSP charges for UK delivery of that particular item (2 pens @ $365) are $141.79: $42.26 shipping + $99.53 fees. By contrast, using First Class International (tracked) would probably cost $89.20: $13.50 shipping + $75.70 import VAT. In effect, Pitney Bowes are taking $52.59 in handling fees just for slitting open and resealing (or not) the package.

The same thing has happened again! An empty padded bag just arrived via the Global Shipping Program, slit open at one end and improperly resealed, so that it was travelling across the Atlantic like this, shedding its load on the way, presumably:

While I have other grumbles about the GSP, my main one could be resolved if they simply invested in some stronger tape!

The seller opened a case with eBay after I started a "return" (not sure what I was supposed to return, though). To be fair eBay refunded me fairly promptly. My only loss, apart from the disappointment of losing the item, are the dollar-sterling currency conversion fees that my bank charges.

Same here. Just received a second package via GSP and it was more expensive and on the whole slower than USPS First Class or EMS Japan in my experience. And it was supposed to by Priority Mail. Yeah, nah!

I will be avoiding sellers that use it in future.

It's nothing but a way to pick our pockets even deeper...the greed in the world today is often breathtaking. If this bs starts in Germany I'll close my eBay account.

I do actually buy from these sellers but pay a lot less for the item. I decide on the combined cost (as I always do) and that is my bid. What I have noticed is that often sellers using this service get a lot less for the actual item. I have actually grabbed some really good stuff at a discount because others aren't bidding. Generally my winning bids get nowhere near my max bid price on the few items I win.

Thank all of you for the warnings.

I have noticed some really astronomical shipping over the last year but just avoided looking harder for the reason why.

All sellers who charge high shipping prices get considerably less for their items. Some still believe that can make a profit on hiked-up shipping, but in fact that just gets them bad star ratings nowadays.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
