It doesn't come up so well on my work monitor, but this is an attempt to show that Texas Blue Steel is a working FP replacement for Thistle Powdered ink at the original (1x) strength.

You know, that may be part of why I like it so much.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

See, the way to Amber's heart is through a good green-blue-black ink.

It's funny. ...I am not a big lover of teal inks. In fact, these may be the only two I like.

The right way to Amber's heart is bright retina-searing colours!

Then how do you explain Noodler's Kung Te Cheng? It was her description of its virtues that got me to try a sample of it in the first place. And now I have a back-up bottle for when the first 4-1/2 oz. bottle finally gets used up.... :headsmack:

KTC is another ink that I own and use DESPITE its color. KTC is the most resilient ink I have ever owned and I still use it in my yard now that we don't have a plant nursery any longer. If KTC looked like BSB or if BSB performed like KTC, I might not have such a large ink collection and I might only use a handful of pens. Scary thoughts.

  • 1 month later...

I decided to update this mini co-razy, taking a bit more time, and using FP strength Thistle Blue-Black in a Platinum Preppy

fpn_1453006089__thistle-vs-texasbluestee

The title and the 'vs' are both written in Thistle Blue-Black 3x conc., while the lines under those two are done with Texas Blue Steel. I can't see any difference either with the expanded view, or with a loupe on the original.

PS, please note that where I wrote Texas Blue Bonnet in the title, I meant Texas Blue Steel.

So, if you are Thistleless you should use Dromgooles Blue Steel? Or if you are out of DBS you should mix Thistle at 3x the recommended concentration?

I love it! .

Yes, remembering that my starting point is the concentration on the sachet, i.e. 1 pkt to 1 quart (Imp) hot water.

I think I have said elsewhere that Thistle should be mixed at 4x concentration, i.e. 1pkt to 1/2 pint. It can then be diluted as necessary - 4x or 3x for fountain pens, 2x or 1x for dip pens.

I just realised that I wrote Texas Blue Bonnet in the co-razy title, when I meant Texas Blue Steel.

Also, Thistle is a bit of a slow mover through the pen (tried two pens, two nibs/feeds, same effect) but, that allows the shading you don't see with the TBS. Or you could add a teeny tiny tad of flow agent (aka detergent) to the mix of Thistle.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
