The Weekly Sketch ~ Themed Drawing Prompts For Members

Pira

Recommended Posts

Based on suggestions by FPN members who like to use their pens & ink to draw but find they lack motivation, I am starting this thread to encourage sketching.

There are no hard and fast rules on how much time participants should spend on their work, nor how skilled the sketchers must be. This is about setting a personal goal to take time every week and draw an object. The benefit is to the individual as they hone their skills one line at a time and take pleasure in the act of creating.

1. Each theme will run Sunday - Saturday.

2. Themes will be posted on the first Sunday of each Month, for the entire month.

3. You may post your sketch at any time you wish during that week.

4. Each theme will be numbered. Please include that with your post.

5. Do not post a drawing prior to the date set for the theme.

6. If you are unable to post the week of the theme but still wish to do so later, you are free to post the image.

7. You may participate in as many or as few themes as you wish.
8. Include the materials (pen, ink, paper, etc.) you used for the sketch. Thoughts on the process are encouraged if you are willing, as we can learn from each other.
9. If you have any suggestions for themes, please email me.
10. Have fun!

I'll play.

#1

"Coffee and kitty."
Quick (< 5 minutes) sketcth. Pen & ink
Sheaffer standard black cartridge, Iroshizuku momiji

My first attempt was with 3H pencil under-drawing, however I smudged it while the ink was wet. This one was without the pencil.

Nice job, stonezebra. :)

Why thank you! You've just drawn two of my favorite things - coffee and kitties. :D (tortie?)

Thanks Pira for organising this weekly sketch project for us all.

And stonezebra and cmrenn, you were fast! :D

I'd love to read the descriptions of inks, pens, thoughts and processes along with gawking at everyone's drawings. So much to learn, so much to enjoy!

Happy drawing everyone, I am really excited! I'll get going with my cuppa coffee too. :)

My desk is a drawing table so I always have a small sketchpad nearby, along with various pencils and pens. I'm looking forward to your sketches.

Thanks Pira for the nudge to get me sketching.

Here's #1 sketch, my mid-morning coffee. It's an Athens 2004 Olympics souvenir mug, hence the arty blobs.

Paper: Moleskine pocket sketchbook

Method: Rough proportions and sketch in pencil first, then I bit the bullet with the ink

Hey, it's not fair I posted right after Snak's. That's like doing an amateur guitar solo right after Eric Clapton.

Oh WOW you guys have been busy little bees with your pens :)

I'm so happy that folks have jumped on this little wagon and I look forward to enjoying the ride.

I'll comment on the artwork later, but just wanted to say a big Thank-you to everyone who has embraced this project with such enthusiasm! :bunny01: Draw on!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
