Noodler's (Fph) Old Dutch Colony Sepia

Noodler's makes a few custom inks for Fountain Pen Hospital in New York City. One of them is Old Dutch Colony Sepia. Apparently meant to imitate the ink used back in the day of the 17th century Old Dutch Colony of New Netherlands. It's not a bad imitation of some sepias. It is very similar to the Hakase Real Sepia, though a bit redder. My guess it is vastly less expensive, and no animals were harmed in the making of the Old Dutch Colony sepia. I've been using it on Moleskine notebook as my work log book, and it seems to be pretty OK there. And on better papers, it behaves very well.

 

This time round, I found a Clairfontaine notebook, and so have included writing samples on that paper as well. The ink blot didn't really photograph well. To my eye, it is a bright greenish yellow halo around the brown center. But the photos all show yellow. I'm guessing my eye is generating some simultaneous contrast there.

 

The regular pictures here are showing the ink a bit darker than it really is. The ink is quite similar to Sailor Ishida Bungu Hakodate Curry, but redder/more neutral than that ink. They are almost identical in value.

 

 

 

 

 

Interestingly, when blotting water droplets, a rose color was left behind. When washing the ink, the yellow was what washed away, leaving some the brown.

Great review. Ink— not so much.

 

I really, really don't like the wash, which goes distinctly yellow. Yuck. It looks pretty OK on the Tomoe River, though.

Thank you for the review and all your poetic finds! This reminds me somewhat of Iroshizuku Yama-Guri which I love. However, this look a tad yellow? I am going to FPH in the next couple of weeks, the excitement cannot be put into words. I may have to increase my baggage allowance...!

AND "Pray tell" WHAT ink wouldn't look great in this pen? (On a dark Fall day I would surely "use up" some of my Sheaffer's KING'S GOLD! )

Yes Bhavna, I think the pictures are showing the ink darker than it really is. It's similar to Sailor's Ishida Bungu Hakodate Curry, Hakase's Real Sepia, J. Herbin Lie de Thé, but it is less yellow than that last ink.

the color tone of this sepia ink seems much more saturated than what i expect from a 'sepia' ink color tone should be. i was expecting a much more muted light brown. but otherwise, a nice brown ink.
