Parker Penman Sapphire Insanity

whichwatch

Recommended Posts

A previously opened, not quite full bottle of Parker Penman Sapphire sold on Ebay today for $152.50. 3 different people bid at least $119 with 2 bidding at least $150. Tulips anyone?

As much as I'd love to try some, at $152.50 per partial bottle I'll just enjoy the Inkmyn Sapphire I mixed (or Noodlers Liberty's Elysium or Private Reserve American Blue) and put in an empty Parker Penman bottle. Heck, I can fill the bottle sequentially with Inkmyn Sapphire AND Liberty's Elysium AND American Blue and STILL have $100 left over!

That's silly money when there are still bargains around. I recently nabbed a NOS Blue Laque Parker Sonnet with 18k nib. Don't really want the pen but it came in a presentation box with a bottle of Parker Penman Sapphire. Total cost £19.

Since you are not interested in the pen, I can help you to get rid of it

Thank you for the offer :-) I'm either going to PIF it, or give it to a young FP user, for Fountain Pen Day.

This is one of those times I am grateful NOT to like BLUE ink! I have a bottle & several carts of PPS because I just HAD to see "what the fuss was about." It was a beautiful shading & incredible sheener BUT @ the end of the day it is BLUE! I do like the PP Mocha (my 1st PP purchase) but not really more than the numerous Sailor produced brown inks. I recently got PP Ruby & was underwhelmed; BUT grateful it was only $30. which made it more bearable. I am sure I will "fall for" PP Emerald someday because I AM an ADDICT, after all..........BUT I really do think the "mythical reputation" of these inks causes these unrealistic sale prices.

AND I am now up to more than a dozen Blues/Blue Blacks & TRYING to appreciate the popularity of same. BUT they will never hold the allure for me that "murky" colors do I am afraid. Just the MENTION of Sailor making a "mushroom/truffle, algae, sea critter, etc ink REALLY "gets my attention!"

Given that Noodler's Liberty's Elysium Blue is pretty well a dead ringer for PPS, it is pretty well insane.

The only difference between the two is that LEB seems to have more wetting agent than PPS. This makes LEB less likely to clog a badly sealed pen (PPS doesn't clog pens that seal properly), it dries a tad more slowly and bleeds a little bit more. However on good paper you wouldn't notice the difference.

if you have a dryish pen, Private Reserve American Blue is also a good replacement.

I agree that PR American Blue is surely a "contender" BUT I hesitate to ever risk the wrath of the PPS aficionados to go "further than that!" BUT shortly after I finally secured my bottle (@ a reasonable price) I filled a broad nibbed Parker 51 with PR AB & was surely appreciative of the similarity!

It's a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a bottle of ink but if I had a decent disposable income (which I do not) I might pay something like that. It would be pretty darn cool to have such an iconic ink for those special letters.

NO, buy them, ship them and make a profit. ;)

After reading this thread I feel good with myself for buying a bottle of PPS last year for $45.00! It doesn't seem that expensive, specially when you consider that a bottle of Bung Box Sapphire is selling for $43.00 at a well known retailer... ;)

Now that there are so many recipes around for making PPS on here and on other forums, I would have trouble trusting that I would get an authentic bottle of PPS on ebay. As I have 3 bottles, which is more than I will use in my lifetime, I don't even look for it anymore.

On the other hand, talking of insanity when it comes to ink prices on ebay, how about This one

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
