Estie cartridge substitution?

Psyktek

Recommended Posts

Since, as a newbie, I still don't know my elbow from a hot rock I bought an Estie on eBay that I thought was an unkown FP. Described as a "CA", I thought it might be a California model.

Imagine my surprise (and embarassment) when I pulled the cap and found...a rollerball! with this strange, spiral ink track.

Since I now have an FP of near the same vintage and appearance, does anyone know a cartridge (BP or RB) that will fit?

Hi Psyktek,

I think you got yourself a nice "Capillary Action", which was a proprietary ball-point system by Eversharp (not Esterbrook). IIRC it never worked well, and the only solution I know is to convert them to use BIC refills.

I almost made the same mistake... if capped, the only way to see that it is a CA and not a Fifth Avenue FP is the cap colour. The CA has a silver-like cap (with gf clip ? ), while the Fifth Avenue always has a gold cap.

usual disclaimer... all information is not warranted against a corrupted firday evening brain :D

Denis.

Edit : the CA also came in the same shape as the Skyline.

To see if that's what you have, you can take a look at Jim's page on the CA : The Pen That Killed Eversharp

Thanks Denis!! I have the CA, not the Fifth Ave. and, unfortunately, it has the original style cartridge that unscrews counterclockwise, so the conversion to a BIC stick refill isn't possible. In unscrewind and reinserting the cart. I actually got it to write for about 15 seconds, enough to sign my name twice! Then it quit.

Interesting story, and now I know I've got the pen that could serve as an epitaph for Eversharp! :bunny1:

Now I want to find a companion FP!!

Come Monday I'm going to take pics of a number of my pens but for now...no, the one I have has the stainless steel cap and gold clip with an ss cap on the end of the barrel.

Bob

That's a beautiful set of pens, by the way.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
