Ink Review: Diamine Pumpkin

Recommended Posts

My latest ink is Diamine Pumpkin. I just had to review this ink during October. It is a bright orange. Actually, I mean it's a really bright orange. It's brighter than most of my other orange inks, but admittedly I don't have that many.

I decided to use Diamine Gerbera, Montblanc Mahatma Gandhi and Pelikan Edelstein Mandarin as my comparison inks this time. As expected I found that Pumpkin is the brightest orange. Gerbera is similar, but is a bit more toned down with red. I have a sample of Gerbera to review later. Gandhi leans a little more towards yellow.

Because I have a Lamy Nexx M pen with an orange cap, there was really no need to look further for a pen to review this ink with. It has a 1.1 stub nib. I found the ink flowed really well across the page. I wrote all of the way across the page and could see the Pumpkin ink shining wet in a trail. The it dried quickly as I started my next line of writing.

You could use this ink as a highlighter across typing. It is certainly bright enough. And if you like fun, bright orange ink, well you're all set with Pumpkin.

  • Before I scanned the document, I forgot to do the water test on the review form, so I had to do it later. However although this isn't a waterproof ink, it shows good water resistance.
  • Bearing in mind the paper I use is thick with a shiny surface, and I used a 1.1 stub nib, this ink took just 8-9 secs to dry.
  • It flows through the pen well and lubricates the nib well. I saw no skips or hard starts while I did swabs and dry time tests.
  • It is currently available in 80ml glass bottles or 30ml plastic refill bottles.
  • Diamine sell it directly to end-users on their web-site.
  • It's a reasonable price
  • It's a great fun ink!

Does anyone have both this ink and Diamine Blaze Orange? I wonder how different they are. I looked at Signum1's review for the Pumpkin ink but I thought Blaze Orange was brighter than that.

They are similar ~ but there is a slight peachy undertone to the Pumpkin or you can say that the Blaze is redder. I would say the latter is brighter, but then that depends on how you define 'bright'

How about a Blaze Orange vs Pumpkin vs Sailor Apricot (yes yes I know it's discontinued)

I'm sorry but I don't have Diamine Blaze Orange to compare against Pumpkin.

However, on screen Pumpkin looks muted by comparison to my written review form. It's difficult to reproduce these retina-searing colours effectively on screen.

I find it hard to believe that another orange ink could be brighter than Pumpkin. I liken Pumpkin to a bright orange highlighter pen.

Chrissy, great choice to use the stub nib on this review, because it shows off the potential shading. This review is one of the few that might benefit from a warning in the headline: "Sunglasses Recommended."

I used to have a small sample of Blaze Orange... and I own Pumpkin. I never made a swatch card of Blaze Orange.. :(

If memory doesn't fail me... You don't need sunglasses for Blaze Orange... B)

Thanks bobjpage. :)

I was writing to a penpal last night, and started to feel tired. I picked up the Lamy NexxM with Pumpkin in it, and it immediately woke me up. I actually wrote , 'get your sunglasses on' in my letter. :D

Thanks for the review. I never thought I'd like orange, but its been growing on me). I like the colour for post meeting notes and annotations. It contrasts well with my usual black or blue. Even green. Because of this though, I don't think I will need a huge volume. Pumpkin looks like a good option as I know Diamine does the 30ml samples.

As I've collected more orange inks, I've now added some of them to the comparisons on my original review form.

I've included Sailor Apricot and Diamine Blaze Orange

That's helpful. Thank you.

Diamine Pumpkin interests me because it's visually fun, which is unlike the more sedate inks I often use.

Glad to see this review reappear, as I like to start thinking about my autumn inks right about now! Doesn’t get much more festive than pumpkin!

Diamine Pumpkin was one of the first bottles of ink I ever bought. I'm not a huge orange fan, but I'd decided to use orange as one of my "planner" colors for coding certain events. This seemed like a good vivid orange. Price might have played a part in choosing it as well.

I couldn't believe that I got the perfect orange for me in the first go. It is now my favorite orange, ever. It's so bright and cheerful that even an anti-orange person like me can't help but smile when I see it. Even my husband, another orange hater, loved this ink.

I usually have to buy a new bottle every other year or so, because it gets used that much. By two orange haters.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
