Nope. It's Not Perfect. I Think I'll Add A Bit Of....

When the color you bought is just not perfect... what ink do you use to fix it?

What does this ink do to improve the not-so-perfect ink? Does it darken the color? Make it lighter? Brighter? Tones it down a bit? Etc.

If you wish to divulge your super-duper top-secret inky-mixing ratios and combinations, please do so in the INKY RECIPES thread.

mixing inks is kinda hard... <_< >_> I can deal with saturated colors but less saturated colors are like a pain especially the pink ones

Hi,

I agree - the inks with low dye-load can be a bit tricky to get the ratio of inks.

As your experience with the Pink inks indicated, when the hue is pale / elusive, giving it just a 'nudge' can be exasperating. One thing I've done when just nudging the hue is to dilute the nudging ink (with the lowest % in the blend) before adding to the main ink.

So rather than working along a straight line, there's a bit of triangulation, which just might get you where you want a bit faster — or at least let you know if the two inks (+water) you're working will eventually get you to the desired hue. Sometimes you cannot get there from here.

It depends on what direction I wish to nudge the ink.

I mixed Diamine Evergreen with Diamine Green-black, to darken it in my Prima F nib. Normally D. Evergreen IS a dark green when wet. It really depends on color and pen usage for me. I nudge inks every which way because for me it is fun.

Be Happy, work at it. Namaste

I find I'm generally adding water. This is especially true of some of the super saturated Noodler's inks. If I need to go darker I'll usually use Noodler's Black as I like it's lubrication and waterproofness (of course, be careful whenever mixing). Surprisingly, I accidentally inked up a pen with Montblanc Royal Blue that was already partially inked with Diamine Ancient Copper. The result was a beautiful purple that reminded me of a brighter R&K Sciabosa. (Not posting in the Inky Recipe section as I have no clue what the % of the mix was -- mostly Royal Blue obvi).

I find myself adding Nooder's Navajo Turquoise, LCR or Cactus Fruit Eel to a lot of inks - just because.

Then, I find that I add Ghost blue - just because - and it improves resilience. It also makes the ink dryer.

If it needs to be wetter or more resilient, then De Atramentis Document Turquoise or Magenta.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

BTW, Sandy may be the one who explained this on another thread, remember to mix cymk colors and not ryb colors to get nice crisp colors.

I have heard of photo flow being added to certain inks. Not too sure what it is or does but I am curious to find out.

It's a product made by Organics Studio that makes inks more lubricated. However, it's really concentrated. Just dipping a syringe needle tip in is enough to add to a vial full of a dry ink.

I always add it when I use PPS or PPR

No, is not a product by Organic Studios. Is a product by Kodak. Photo-Flow is a wettening agent, it decreases the surface tension of water making the ink to flow more freely.

Sandy1 has a post somewhere that explains the dilution process of Photo-Flow to make it ready to use. It is very easy to totally make an ink unusable if you don't follow proper dilution steps.

Thank you for posting a picture of the actual bottle & label. I have looked @ this previously but have been quite confused over the options available. After this information I first tried Amazon & was less than enthusiastic ober the shipping charge being equal to the price of the product. Minutes later after a good Googling

I had the name of a camera supply shop called "DC or District Camera" in Burke, VA, which did indeed offer the identical product (same CAT # !) at a similar price but @ $6.00 less shipping charge! They did offer a variety of expedited shipping options but since I currently had NO Photo Flo I am happy to await it's arrival in 3-5 days.

AND I owe it all to Cyber6 for her usual gracious sharing from her "immense Vault of information! "

ALL MY INKS WILL FLOW like the AMAZON! (I will certainly read Sandy1's post for "proper instruction" less they FLOW right OFF the PAPER onto the floor.)

Please do... I totally ruined a bottle of Ambre de Birmanie (which I love) by adding a pin drop of it. No jokes. :bawl: :bawl:

Apparently Organics Studio had (has?) a flow enhancer / biocide product called Flo-Plus.

You do not have a right to post. You do not have a right to a lawyer. Do you understands these rights you do not have?

@Cyber: Do you dilute it in water first or add it to the ink in teeny tiny quatities?

Dilute with distilled water FIRST. Again.. there is a very detailed post from Sandy1 on how to dilute to a level where you can add tiny quantities. Photo-Flo is very concentrated, a pin drop can be too much.

I came this close to binning my troublesome bottle of Noodler's 54th. It hard started in everything I used it in but I loved the colour and adored it's robustness so, with the help of some donated Photo Flo, I followed Sandy1's above recommendations to the letter and now have a usable, reliable version Noodler's 54th - and a shedload of Photo Flo Mix to come to the rescue in future.

(Let me know if you'd like some diluted mix)

Similarly, I have enough golden shellac flakes to glue the hoods on over a million Parker 51s...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
