Long-Time Lurker. First Time Poster. Hello!

Hello lovely FPN people!

Have been lurking here for so long but now I decided to finally join in the conversation! I am a lifelong user and admirer of fountain pens. My dad gave me my first pen, a Sheaffer 440 when I was 14 y.o. and I haven't looked back since!

My actual favorite is a Platinum Izumo red which I got when I was living in Singapore. I hope that my son will inherit that pen at an adequate time. I just got a Noodler's Ahab (clear demo) and replaced the nib with a Zebra G as I am trying to work on my penmanship. All these years pounding on keyboards and not taking care of my handwriting have taken their toll ;) Only a few years back I got a Lamy while in Amsterdam (thought they were too "cheap" when I was young) and love it as a regular workhorse. That Al-Star has seen some abuse and managed to stay put with dignity! I am trying to get the parts to restore my granddad's Vacumatic which has suffered a lot too but is holding up as a great dip pen with a stub nib (My wife smashed the nib while in Baja). The other day I carved a quill pen from a turkey feather and must say it's pretty decent for a first timer. I also have a few Mujis, Sheaffers, a Hero and a Parker catching dust in my pen shelf too...

So that's basically me, my other Sheaffers, including a couple snorkels from my (other) granddad as well as the Watermans I got from my dad when starting College are in storage at my base place which is a bit far from where I live now.

Best regards to all and thanks for your contributions to this great community!

Peace

Hi sodariver. I fell down this particular rabbit hole quite recently myself and oh boy what a fascinating place I landed in! I just love reading all the different posts - who knew things like ink, pens and paper could be so interesting? :)

Welcome, Sodariver !

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I hope you can keep all of your fountain pens in service. I use a few at a time, in rotation. The pens from your grandfather are especially precious. Friends and family will appreciate getting letters written with his pen.

Write with joy.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
