Okay, Have I Missed Something? I haven't been in here for a while and now things look different. And I see things about membership levels. Do we have to pay now to be FPN members? Could someone please give me an update as to what's going on in here these days?

Welcome back... You must have been otherwise engaged for some time... :)

Because cost for running a large forum like this went ever up, paying memberships were inroduced, aimed at those people who make a living (partly) from dealing or advertising here on the forum.

It was always possible to donate, but now donating levels were introduced where you would get small tokens of gratitude from the forum.

And since a few moths extern advertising, first only pen related but now also other advertisements were introduced.

Some people dislike being bothered by ads so a donation form was introduced were as a reward the ads were turned of for that member.

Apart from that, as we are based in Europe, we have to comply with the European Cookie Laws, so we have a message informing you of our using cookies, which you have to click that you acknowledge.

Part of this is still experimental, we are trying to find ways to make this all as unobtrusive as possible to the members, while still getting enough revenue to uphold the running of this Forum. It is possible that we will find other/better ways to display things.

As it is, FPN is still free, but in that case you will have to accept a certain level of advertisement.

But we have asked the advertisement agencies to leave out certain type of advertisements. However, every now and then one slips through, end we would appreciate if you would report these to us, with the name of the ad, the type of obnoxious behaviour it displays, and if possible the url of the ad, and/or a screenshot so we can complain with the advertisement agencies.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
