Question For Geeks - Are Nibs And Tips Interchangeable?

Recommended Posts

I have found Jinhao pen that can have configuration of fountain pen with nib and rollerball pen. See attached picture where you will see Jinhao Dragon's Offspring or Jinhao 888. I am not sure whichever is more correct as there's also NJ39, 40 and 41... Left one I saw in one seller's eBay store and right one in different seller's store but I want to buy former (rollerball pen) from second seller who has only fountain pen. What I am trying to understand is do these pens have some kind of compatibility where fountain pen can be converted into rollerball pen? I mean I understand that both have different ink containers and nib cannot be interchanged with tip but I am sure I can take out ink container with nib from fountain pen and put rollerball refill inside. Correct?

Consequently can rollerball pens and ballpoint pens be interchangeable i.e. I keep using same barrell, cap but now can turn pen into gel pen with gel refill or ballpoint refill?

I also liked X250, X450 and X750 but will there be different variables provided I want to do similar conversions I mentioned above?

Appreciate your help to enlighten me.

I do know that the kaigelu 316 has a roller ball conversion kit. Not sure of the jinhaos. But seeing that the tooling for the rest of the pen may not change on account of economies of scale it is a safe bet to assume that the barrels and caps are interchangeable.

Are rollerball pens compatible with gel refills? I mean pens are pens but what makes difference is rollerball refills and gel refills. As long as pen has rollerball refill then I will have no problem with replacing it with gel refill? Am I correct?

Gel & Rollerball differences are usually just the filling inside the unit, with the units being the same size.

In many cases the 'High level' difference between a rollerball and the fp is the section. On a number of kit pens, they are closer than that, with the RB cone being a press fit into the FP section. That way the design effort & different parts count is minimised. On more strongly differentiated pens (such as some Parker's) the barrel internal length is different, the section shape is different and the cap internal shape is different. I think some Jinhao's (including the one shown above) have been engineered along kit pen lines.

Regards,

Richard.

Short answer, yes. Longer answer: It depends. There are multiple styles of refill, and compatibility is likely only across refills of the same style. Out of curiosity, a quick trip to my supply pile showed that the Jinhao rollerball refills are essentially the same size as Staples' Avant refills. My X450 rollerball was a more snug fit with the Avant refill, but it took it. My metal 599 is designed for the refill to screw into the section, and the Avant refill lacks threads, so the refill yields to pressure and retracts a bit, but it looks like it would be useable. My guess is that for Chinese pens, any refill size and shape compatible with the Jinhao refills should work. Find a refill compatibility chart. It will be more helpful than I can.

As to whether you can turn a fountain pen into a rollerball, etc. Most Chinese pens already make both, but it should just take a compatible section as a means of conversion. For instance, the two pens pictured should be able to swap sections.

Hope this helps.

If anyone has a spare Hero 812 in white that they're willing to part with, please PM me. I'm trying to find one for my collection.

Not sure if this has been suggested already but would a setting for localized regions or chapters in FPN be helpful? I don't know if there is a way to find local FPN members who would be nearby. I don't know if we want to be discoverable but a setting to know how many members are in 25, 50, or a 100 miles of each other might be helpful. We can create a regions specific network like Craigslist where people could use that to connect with nearby members, conduct in person sales, arrange FPN meetups

Hi again all, I forgot to tell y'all that I made the post about Sweden ink PIF. Most have probably found it long ago, but here's a link, anyway:

I read your blog post and all the replies with much interest. I'm a FP user in Australia. Been part of this forum for years but rarely post. I did come across your ink sharing thread and considered participation. For me it's not lack of interest but lack of time to play around with FP and inks. I'd feel bad to put my hand up for the box and just have it sit until gosh knows when...   I also think that the FP community in Australia is smaller, and I wonder how many in the community are

Even so, you'd end up with a fragmented list, and it becomes an O(N²) process for each prospective requestor to check what is available: effectively recreate the list of currently active servers (without any reliable up-to-date info upfront about the inks and number of samples on offer in the thread) from the sequential list of posts, which may be spread over two or even more pages, and then query each server independently to check what is currently on offer.   It comes down to not hav

If one wanted to do this, one could just use the "About Me" field which appears to be unlimited in size.  And if a bunch of people wanted to cooperate, the Member Title field (or signature) could be used to this end - "Ink Giver" (or some such) could be used by those with inks to give...  No software edits required.
