I agree. Most European countries have a disth that is variation on the theme.  I fell in love with Jaegertopf when I was in Germany in 1977.  I think it is made with rabbit.

Yessir! I keep telling myself I'm only trying all these pens for sketching and calligraphy, but even time-wise the ratio is tilted in favor of looking at and even buying pens. Hopefully, this will change 😄

I just stopped to think... you mean they're not all impulsive?

Anyway, I had a windfall in April and hopped on an Esterbrook with a prototype Triumph-style nib that never did go into production.  I'm at work and will have to do pictures when I get home.  I don't expect to ink it, but it's an interesting piece!

And old friend and I were catching up in the grocery store parking lot and he mentioned that his wife had found some old fountain pens her mom and dad had and asked if I was interested.  I figured some Esterbrooks and Wearevers but thought what the heck. Went over and bought all of them from her.

No, some of mine are carefully planned and researched for best prices including shipping.  As opposed to ones that I run across at estate sales and antiques shops or the occasional eBay. purchase....

Congratulations.

Nice group of new (for you) pens. personally I am drawn to the Blue and Black Sheaffers. Guess I will add those to my "look for/shopping list for the (promo plug) Commonwealth Pen Show in September.

Wish me success.

I'm concerned that I'm not making any impulsive purchases and too easily talking myself out of interest in anything. Now I've stopped browsing the auctions too... Is there a cure?

Will work for pens...

No need for concern.  I passed on the Pi pen Conway Stewart was tempting me to by at a discounted price.

Cure yourself of, what, freedom from FOMO? 🤔

I've unwisely decided to give Leonardo Officina Italiana yet another chance, although in all likelihood it's going to screw up and disappoint yet again in terms of supplying a fit-for-purpose writing instrument in whatever leaves the factory to go to the distributors (or, I suppose, straight to customers if the company also engages in direct retail). All because I want to be ‘nice’ about getting free international shipping on yet another order in accordance with the pre-programmed business rules, instead of ‘argue’ my case with the retailer (who would no doubt oblige) to tack ‘the main event’ — rats and mice stuff on clearance offer — onto some other qualifying previous order.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

All part of give and take. I balance the situation between not pressing the retailer to partially fulfil my orders (that individually qualify for free international shipping) over separate ‘free’ shipments when it cannot have everything ready for dispatch in a ‘reasonable’ amount of time, and even actively try to plan what to ship so that it can save on shipping by sending outstanding items from multiple orders at once (as long as it doesn't cause me trouble at the border), with having smaller subsequent orders tacked onto earlier, as-yet-unfulfilled orders for combined (and thus ‘free’) shipping. The recently introduced €50 minimum value per valid order is a little bit of a stumbling block; but there is still a lot of distance between €50 and €175.

I placed three new orders within a span of four calendar days, and two of those (including the one onto which I added a Leonardo pen not on clearance special, just for the hell of it) qualify independently for free international shipping; so I can't see how anyone (other than a computer following pre-programmed rules) would decide it's unreasonable for me to ask that the total of the three orders be combined into two ‘free’ shipments, one with all the items that are in-stock, and the other for all that are backordered. :)

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
