What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

I always find this very off-putting when it comes to spending money. We often end up hoping for the best, but end up with quite a bit less than the best, and there's not much we can do about it because the seller made no promises. So I hope this works out for you, and that you didn't spend much money on this pen.

Yeah, I definitely get that feeling sometimes. But honestly, I kind of like taking the risk on these pens that are possibly not in the best condition, the ones that the more "experienced" collectors might not go for. If I get some (bleep), yeah it kinda sucks, but if I get something cool and bring it back to life, I've found that really rewarding.

A week or two ago I got a set of Wearever pens in really kind of sad condition, one of them had one of the tines bent over completely over the feed (like full-on "U" shape). I managed to finagle it back into shape and smoothed it out and it's a surprisingly decent writer now. It even had its original sac still working! It's a pen that I think 99.9% of collectors would totally ignore but it brought me a little bit of joy. :)

I will receive two modern nozacs from repair. As for acquisitions, I have made a pause for quite some time.  Maybe end of the year or beginning of next year possible new pen purchases.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Noodler's Triple Tail pen. I only went into Dromgoole's for some ink and walked out with a brand new pen!

I just ordered a green Pilot 78G with a BB nib and a baby blue Sheaffer TRZ from Peyton’s Pens. A baby blue Sheaffer has been on my want list since I was a preteen, looking at the pen section in the Service Merchandise catalogue in the late 80s. The Pilot’s nib size was intriguing.

Top 5 of 23 currently inked pens:

Namiki Origami Tradition maki-e Penguin F, Pilot Iroshizuku Ku-Jaku

Sailor X Sakazaki Penguin Pro Gear Slim MF, Sailor Manyo Konagi

Lamy 2000 EF, Diamine Purple Bow

Platinum Hibiscus SF short-long, Platinum Green

Indigo Bronze TWSBI Eco 1.1 Stub, De Atramentis Columbia Blue-Copper

Because pens are an equal-opportunity money pit, down which you will find both men and women.

Today I wavered right to the end, and decided to go for the Montblanc 344 in EF. I have a 342 and like it a lot, I'm hoping I will like this one even more.

It seems to me it skews male, at least on FPN.  Don't know the stats, though!

Does it count if I wasn't the one being impulsive?

Because earlier today my husband and I were helping a friend move a large bookcase into her house (after moving it out of the place where its former owners live).  Afterwards, we were hanging out in her dining room and she gifted us with belated 12th Night presents.  She gave us each a pen and a bottle of ink!

My husband got a  Hong Dian with a fine nib (the label on the box seems to say HD 1850) and a bottle of Taccia Black Jeans.  She gave me a Monteverde Strata (?) with a   broad nib and  bottle of Private Reserve Black Magic Blue (not sure if this is the resurrected formula or not -- apparently I gave my old version sample away several years ago...but I'll give it another shot).

Both pens already have converters installed, so I can just flush them out with soapy water tonight and then rinse and drain them.

This is the person who ran a pysanky workshop at her place a few years ago (something that I had always wanted to learn to do).  My husband mentioned that one of the ones I did got broken, so se gave me one that she had already done, in ADDITION to the pens and inks....

I'm constantly amazed at this woman's talent and generosity.

Excellent choice! However, you should watch out also for 346, as reviewed here by @siamackz 😃

Well I looked at the  Hongdian pen my friend gave my husband, and the cap finial imprint says "6013" on it.  So when I looked that model up, the picture I found online: https://www.amazon.com/Hongdian-Matte-Black-Fountain-Titanium/dp/B0818QT977?th=1 looks like the pen he was given (the image I found for an 1850 did not).

The Monteverde Strata seems to be a bit heavier than my TWSBIS but I wasn't able to find a vendor for it that listed the weight (the Hongdian is even heavier than than the Strata is).

I suppose I just bought a pen on impulse. I put in an offer on eBay for a Retro 51 fountain pen in the discontinued Peacock color. The offer was accepted, so that equals an agreement. I have been wanting said color. I’d see them on European websites, only to find out it was out of stock. A US site had one for $110.

The one I bought is shipping from Belgium. It was $20 less than the above amount. I must stop buying pens.

I just ordered a Skyline in kind of questionable condition, I hope that I don't even up regretting it. From the pics the nib looks fine but the cap looks a bit off, I'm hoping the top of the cap was just not screwed in all the way (seller doesn't seem familiar with pens so they probably didn't tinker with it) and not shrunken. Fingers crossed!

Here's hoping!

Nope, my son pointed out that his lego collection is worth more than I paid.  So as soon as he leaves me alone with his collection......   just kidding.

I know nothing about this pug ugly pen other than I found it fascinating. It has absolutely no quality to it but was appropriately cheap so I succumbed.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
