Oh boy, wasn't going to mention this but I took delivery of a very nice Graf von Faber-Castell Classic F nib in Grenadilla last week.  Oozes class.  Writes buttery and bouncy.  Been using it at the office lots!

What about the B? :o

Oops. I do have a B nib, I just forgot to list it.

So now I have Platinum #3776 14K gold UEF, EF, F, SF, M, B, SM, and MS nibs in my fleet. That's every nib type and width grade available for the #3776 line except Coarse.

A nib grade called ‘Coarse’? 🤔

Is it a speciality nib whose grind is optimised for the writing of Rude Letters? 😉

Sorry folks.

I’ll get me coat….

Yes, Platinum has it, and so does Pilot.

Thank you, ASD.

The "Coarse" looks a lot like a Pelikan BB or even 3B. Found it interesting, too, that the Pelikan IB is even broader than a Sharpie. I have one and knew it is broad, but that comparison brought out quite HOW broad it is pretty nicely.

For me, the barometric pressure seemed to make a difference about when the pens would work.  The pressure could be the difference in how prone to surface tension the pen is and when you combine the heat of holding the pen and the large surface area available because of the large ink capacity,  it just seemed to be that eyedroppers and Las Vegas do not agree.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

This guy... which was promptly disassembled, cleaned, with old sac material taken out of the barrel, and then re-sac'd and ready to write within a couple hours of receipt.

No definitive clue on when it was made, could be 1910s, but could also be 1920s (they were a cheaper brand run by Waterson).

Nice job for refurbishing it. Did you do any polishing? If not, it is even more impressive.

How does it write?

The thread to which you linked is a fascinating (& envy-inducing) demonstration of the range of nibs that is still offered by Japanese manufacturers.

I must add that I am amused by the fact that these manufacturers have chosen to name these nibs ‘coarse’.

Its main meaning is of course as an antonym for ‘fine’, but one synonym of ‘coarse’ in English is ‘vulgar’ (in order to describe a contrast with ‘fine’ manners, ‘fine’ quality, etc).

The fact that Japanese companies chose the name ‘Coarse’ for their grade of nibs that are even wider than the ‘Broad’ nibs produced by Foreigners from the West pleases me 😁

Full disclosure: I am an English man who also finds the abusive German-language term ‘Inselaffen’ for Brits to be amusingly apposite.

Just ordered a Karas Ink v2 in all Copper with a double broad nib.

I told myself I wouldn't buy any pens for the first half of the year. Now I need to find a new calendar to use.🤪

Beautiful pen. Make sure you start working out with whichever hand/arm you use to write with. Than pen weighs >100g. It is a beast!

How does it write?

Just a wipe down and clean out with mineral oil to avoid any contact with water. The only part oxidized is the area around the imprint.

Nib is very smooth and a slight semiflex. A little cumbersome filling with a coin filler.

The current "coarse" offerings are just shadings of "broad" that vary in actual width by manufacturer, however Pilot made a very cool "coarse" nib variant back in the 1960s:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
