What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

lgbpinho

Recommended Posts

I bought a cheap (<30€ paid, likely that's how much the pen is worth) vintage Waterman pen made in France, 18K nib labeled 3B. I am trying to understand if I would enjoy their vintage for drawing and am working my courage for a 2 old-vintage nib, in a Waterman No. 52 [1/2] [v] , 12, or 32. (Nos. 72 and 0552 seem a bit too expensive to think I'd actually draw with them.)

I'm trying to pretend I didn't see the cute bear.

So far I’ve managed to resist the cute bear. But, if you get one, I’ll get one.

Another week has passed by, and I've once again resisted all impulsive pen purchases.  Yes, I know -- boring!

I am working on joining the boring brigade, at least when it comes to purchasing.  I am trying to get more interesting in my usage.  I am on the fence as to ink.

Limiting ink purchases proved very easy for me.  Having tried a variety of colours and hews, I found I only really like and will use three inks of dark blue.  I still have a black and three other inks that will be gifted onwards when the opportunity arrives.

Ah, I'm of the ilk where I try to find the perfect ink for each pen.  Once I find it, I have a permanent pairing.  Before that, I break a lot of eggs...

I just bought one as well.  And two bottles of ink so I could get free shipping from Pen Boutique: a bottle of Robert Oster Dragon's Night, which I tried recently, and a bottle of Noodler's Pasternak, from the Russian series.

I figure that since I have some Safaris/al-Stars/LX pens with duplicate nibs, I can just swap the hanzi nib on to one of those pens.  And if I decide I don't like it?  I'm not out a lot of money and can pass the hanzi nib along to someone else.

I got mine today. Nice but not radical.

Dementia day for my Mom (I hope it’s just a day) is making me want to buy this pen, since it’s relatively inexpensive. Brown bear would growl at dementia. Grrrrrrowl!

Yep, impulsively, and impetuously ordered the Lamy pen @A Smug Dill  showed us. I hope when I get it, the cute bear will make me smile when my Mom’s dementia is making life hard.

I feel the need to add my Mom used to be the most wonderful person. Fun, active, cool. I miss that Mom.

edit: I never thought I would order from AliExpress. They sent an email with a $5 off coupon valid for 7 days.

Ok, now my resistance is useless! I need a bear pen too. :P

Will work for pens...

Yes you do @AmandaW!  I have to admit to you I started the letter I offered to write to you, then haven’t worked on it since. I will, I promise.

Dear @Misfit, thanks for sharing this. I have not written a letter in a long time, that is, physical pen on physical paper, and I've been planning to but it's a slow process. Good to know others take their time, too.

Writing letters is a slow process here too. Even more fun if the different moments get written in the pen and ink of the day. Rainbow letters. :D

Will work for pens...

Yea Amanda! That made me smile. It’s been a bad, bad day. I’ve been pondering what I could spend the $5 credit on at Aliexpress. Is there anything guaranteed legitimate in the pen realm. I already got the Bear pen to make up for the dementia of my Mom, except it has gone on and on and on. I deserve more.

Get a handful of basic Jinhao 51A pens. They're excellent pens for the price; and US$5 can get you almost four of those including free international shipping for the lot. (Prices went up by a little, recently.) They're so cheap, nobody can be bothered producing knock-off versions to compete.

You can choose different nib widths for them if you want some variety.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Actually, I was of a mind to recommend a PenBBS 494 piston-filler, which goes for under US$4 (but shipping might not be free). I’m happy with the construction quality, it can be easily and fully disassembled and reassembled without tools, and Pilot steel nibs from MR and Plumix pens can be fitted into the model. Unfortunately, I have seen knock-off versions of it, so it fails the ‘guaranteed legitimate’ criterion for the unseasoned AliExpress shopper.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
