What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

But printed on the side of the nib was the world "Flex" and it had little divots on the sides.

It is my understanding that the practice of removing half oval sections from each side of the nib will allow the tines to bend backwards at approximately that length of the nib. However, without the nib being shaped (designed) otherwise so that the tines are inclined to spread apart, this tendency to spread will not be much increased by removing these "wing" sections. On Nakaya pens for instance if one places an order for an "elastic" nib this is what is done to the nib & the operation increases the "springiness" of the nib. On the other hand Pilot FA nibs also have these missing divots, but I surmise that these are otherwise designed/shaped to encourage flex and not mere springiness.

It sounds like the pen you had was supposed to flex (given this was inscribed quite unambiguously on the nib). I just wonder sometimes if some of these nib modifications are properly understood by all of the individuals/companies eager to cash in on the expanding interest in fountain pens...

Glad you were able to return a rum nib!

Wing Sung 601. That was 2 weeks ago. The honeymoon lasted less than a day.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

...And now the nib unit is on its way back to the manufacturer.  I will stick with stub nib unit that I have.

Please don't misunderstand.  This was a great learning experience.  In fact, every time we try a different pen, different nib, different paper, different ink, it is a growing experience.  Not only are defining more of our tastes and desires, but we are also broaden our mental processes by trying something new.  And, besides, I like to dabble and experiment.

@DrDebG It's good that they gave the option of returning the nib. It didn't take me long to learn this lesson: It's much easier to turn money into a pen than the other way around 😀

Another lesson is that no matter how much analysis, suggestion and advice you receive about pens and nibs, none can replace the experience of trying out in person and even owning it for a while. Nowadays for many people, this means buying it online and trying it out after paying for it. How else do we REALLY learn?!🙂 In this pen hobby mirrors life.

Even though I had not planned to actually buy any pens at the Commonwealth Pen Show (my budget mostly being for nib repair on the Decimo and to get some converters, including a converter for my husband's Vanishing Point -- as well as a bottle of Namiki Black for him) I ended up losing my heart over a Parker 45 Arrow which I think is Aqua Blue.  And then of course had to get a converter....  Turned out I had a  spare older style squeeze converter at home, but I'm likely to get another Vector at some point or other, so having an extra one of the twist converters isn't a bad plan....

When Fountain Pen Revolution has a Pensanity sale, it's hard for me to pass it up, though I did for their c/c Darjeelings.  The latest was for Indus (a GT piston filler with their #5.5 nibs and a plastic feed) in either red caps demo or yellow caps demo.  I got the yellow in stub, and the red in fine, as well as a converter for my Prera, some spare nibs, and a 25mm lighted loupe.

I really should use that browser more, but no...I didn't try searching that way.

Duck Duck Go's browser is only on phones.  But their search engine, which does not bubble or filter you the way most big tech does, is available on any browser.  And it's easy to use them as a proxy to debubble your google searches, or keep you from having to find Wolfram Alpha, IMDb, the Wicked Paedia, and a plethora of other search engines, database sites, and the like.

As for browsers, my favorites are Pale Moon (a Firefox fork), Firefox, Brave (modified Chrome), and when on Linux, Dillo.

Hadn't heard of Pale Moon.  I like Firefox, other family members like Brave, and Linux is above my pay grade.  I'll have to look up Pale Moon... now, where to search? ;)

My most recent impulse buy was a Parker 51 Flighter Aerometric, because, well, I didn't have one. I was on vacation at the time, and this is the first pen I've bought (made an offer on eBay on a Buy It Now price) using my "smart" phone. Not smart enough to keep me from buying a pen I don't need, apparently. It's due Saturday.

Will be curious to read about your exchange decision.

I decided to get a Scribo Feel with flexible Extra Fine nib in exchange (and a refund of the price difference after discount). I haven't lost all faith in all Italian brands, just Leonardo Officina Italiana; although I dare not give Visconti even a first chance, given its reputation for falling short on quality control.

Chances are, though, the Scribo Feel will end up primarily residing with my wife's fleet. I want to try out its flexible nib, although I have no real use for one, and in my experience select (modern) flex nibs that have a good reputation in hobbyist forums just don't work well for my writing style and technique.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

your comments on the Scribo Feel will be nice to read, ADS, I've been several times tempted by the Scribo for its nib, but the design with such big step section to barrel just scares me away, unless I can try one...

Montblanc 220 (M) just now, from my usual Japanese ebay Montblanc dealer.

I have been avoiding this one for a bit, since I am perfectly happy with my Lamy 2000. But I saw a picture of it today when browsing another site and suddenly thought, "Now's the time!" That's an impulse buy if I ever heard of one.

Please post about your experience.  I have been tempted to try a flex nib, but unlike you I don't write in any character-based languages.  Though I like to find new pens that I enjoy using, I don't like buying things and finding they don't suit!  If there's a flex nib you like for letters, I may well be tempted...

Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition ? Well this opens Pandora's box for me hahaha

Since I joined FPN all my pens have been 'impulsive acquisitions'. I didn't know there were so many brands: Leonardo, Kaweco, Ranga, Jinhao, Edison, Esterbook, Wancher etc. etc.

Bought all of them on impulse, to give them a try.

They are all good pens and nibs, in my opinion. Some small, some medium and some large in size.

Some are cheap and some a bit more expensive but always under 200 GBP

Unfortunately none of these pens have the allure of vintage pens, sorry.

This is why on impulse I bought myself a Vintage, doh, Conway Stewart 27 with medium CS nib 🙂

Waiting for it in the post, hopefully tomorrow.

Schon DSGN Pocket 6, Liza Frunk color, 1.1 stub. Like I need another pen.

Arrived, much sooner than expected! It came with a green cartridge and writes very nicely right out of the box. I was surprised and pleased to receive a little notebook as well.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
