Please tell me other people do this too.

Yep. I do this too, if shipping is over 5€.  I always find something I need or want, because in my mind, that 5€ is better spent on an item than on postage, if that makes any sense. :)

What is this money pit obsession hole I have fallen into?

Yes, I do this, too. :)

Me three, but not with Pen Chalet, because it doesn't offer free international shipping. That's why I generally don't look at US-based retailers at all. EndlessPens was an exception, but since it doubled the free (international, that's the only one that's meaningful to the hobby community at large) shipping threshold my annual spend with them dropped by >80%; and when it changed its shipping policies and made it sound really unfriendly to the customer (even in cases where shipping charges are explicitly paid), it went to $0. Whereas I placed a dozen orders with LCdC in the past six months with each one meeting the free shipping threshold, padding it with more inks and such where necessary; and another half a dozen orders with Cult Pens, again all with free shipping (with some padded to meet the higher threshold for free shipping by DHL).

That's why I'm still waiting for three dozen fountain pens on order to arrive, after having received maybe forty this year so far.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

I'll pay the shipping charges if there's nothing else I need. But I buy infrequently enough, that I can sometimes just add paper to an order if I just need a *small* boost to hit the free shipping threshold.

Usually, I will not buy something random just to get free shipping. I don't need more stuff I won't use...especially more pens that I didn't carefully consider prior to purchasing.

Appears to be have been a yearly thing.  M1005, Hakase and 149, but I think I'm done now.  Plop plop, fizz fizz.

Add lightness and simplicate.

Very nice pen Brad. I hope you enjoy using it. I hope to get back to writing letters, so maybe I’ll see that pen in action.

Got myself a Schon Design Ultem with a stub nib.

Also been thinking of a Custom 823 with a F nib for a couple years and finally got one... on impulse.

Oooh! I'd love an Ultem - such a cool material. What a very impulsive week ;)

The Ultem is very cute indeed.  The Schon Design artwork is fantastic, ie, the logo etc. The pen demonstrates a lot of attention to detail with my only gripe being the sharpness of the threads on the section.

Semi-impulsive buy this morning (the impulse hit a few days ago, but I waited for a discount code) of a Custom 912 FA. And I just remembered I bought a Gravitas Entry a couple of days ago - I really don't like metal pens as a rule, but I'm giving this one a try on the strength of a lot of recommendations.  Oh, and a TWSBI Swipe or whatever it's called seemed to arrive on my desk yesterday (we only get one converter here).

That FA nib will not disappoint.  It's a lovely flex nib and the Custom 912 a great pen to write with both posted or unposted.  I had hard starts that would occur out of the blue with mine.  However, I got that fixed by switching to an ebonite feed, making it an absolute keeper and myself, a fan of the Pilot Custom series.

That's great advice - is there a stock ebonite feed available somewhere or do I need to look for something special? I am a complete novice with Japanese pens (I literally have one Sailor Pro Gear Slim and a bunch of cheapies/calligraphy pens) so it's all rather fun.

Absolutely.  This is the only way that I managed.  See here:

You can get a red or black one.  One with 3 slits or one with 2.  The one with 3 will flow super well.  I got the 2 channel version in red and it works well.

Thank you! And crikey! Three of those would buy me another whole pen ;) I might have to do a bit of bench work on an existing version first...

The one I'm about to make to justify shipping an ink. ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
