Hello,

Here is the review of Hieronymus Blue 01.

For Hieronymus see also:

Paper : « oecoplan » recycled paper made in Austria. A4 pad 70gr/m2.

Pen : Lamy safary 1,5 mm italic nib, wet.

50 ml inkwell Blue 01. This ink is a little cheapper (48chf) than Iroshizuku line (49-52 chf)

Colour : Blue 01 is an ink of dark grey-blue navy colour, it’s belong to the same familly as Fuyu-syogun. On Rhodia paper or with dry nib the ink seems greyer. Wet it’s a little more blue and gets slightly greyer after drying. According to the light and to the paper, it can seem more blue or greyer.

1: Blue 01. 2: Fuyu-syogun. 3: Montblanc midnight blue. 4: Pelikan blue-black.

Behavior on paper : It doesn’t bleed or feather, except on very poor quality paper. With this wet nib I can use both sides of this recycled paper (70gr / m2). On Moleskine paper’s it’s a little showthrough. The ink is « normaly » saturated and doesn’t show much shading.

On Moleskine paper.

Flow : fluid, controlled flow, lubricate the nib, makes dry nibs more fluid.

With 3 different pens.

Water and bleach test : Blue 01 it’s almost 100% waterproof, on the other hand the bleach erases it leaving a light yellow line.

If you look for a ink in the same tones as Fuyu-syogun, but more darkened, then Blue 01 is for you….if you want to pay this price.

Thank you for excellent review. I must say I like what I see. Recently I start to develop taste for such colors. The end is near.

The end will certainly be near once you start liking aqua and PINK!!..

Thanks for the review Jean..

Yes - the day when I will fill one of my pens with aqua blue ink to write with it for sheer pleasure will be the true END of all things :) But for now we can sleep tranquilly - no such thing is happening. After using aqua blue I flush my pen, my hands and my eyes.

If you live in Switzerland then this is cheaper for you. Remember that Iroshizuku comes with custom duties and other shipping charges whereas this is locally made.

The color is nice, maybe I'll give it a try after I get the inks I currently want.

@visvamitra: why don't you like blues? What color of ink do you use normally for official communication? If any.

Blue has been chiseled into my habits due to 12 years of school and can't leave it without feeling a little emptiness. :P

Hi Dhruv_Sood - it's not that I dislike blue. I like some of blues, however I hate bright blue / aqua blues and cyano-turquoises, like Diamine Soft Mint, Pelikan Edelstein Jade, Caran d'Ache Hypnotic Turquoise / Caribbean Blue. I enjoy darker blues. When it comes to official communication I really believe it's more pen users themselves than society that limits their use of colors :) I work as a head-hunter, I meet a lot of executives and I have never ever met anyone having problem with me writing in red, orange, green or brown.

Most often I write in brown (Lie de The - J. Herbin), red (Sailor Oku-Yama), orange (Pumpkin - Diamine) and purple (Poussiere de Lune, J. Herbin). Sometimes green (Moss Green by Graf von Faber - Castell or Green no 5 - KWZI).

I rarely use blue ink because I find most of them boring. I never use black - I just don't like it.

Hi Visvamitra,

I see, the colors you mentioned are pretty bright and I don't think I would like them. Lighter Blues aren't my thing. Didn't like kon-peki much. I prefer darker blues too. Perhaps you can suggest me some. :)

I like green, purple, red and brown too. Can't name any specific one I like but poussiere de lune is great. Expect for the bottle. Can't get more than 2 fills without trouble from my pilot custom 823 and the small ink bottle trouble starts kicking in.

Any green, purple, red and brown you would recommend?

I have J. Herbin 1670 anniversary red and green on order, poussiere de lune and another J.Herbin brown on order.

jean, this is GORGEOUS !

What a sophisticated colour. Love it.

Thais now makes two out of two Hieronymus inks I really like.

What's with the cost though? Too too much. Shame. :crybaby:

Yep, I just received the Green 01 sample sent by Peter and the color is really nice. Too bad the cost is too high.

With 48 CHF, I can probably buy 3 bottles of other inks like J.Herbin 1670 and Iroshizuku and still be left with some for shipping.

Yes - I love everything about this inks except for the price :/

Dhruv_sood - my recommandations would be:

Green - try at least one of KWZI green, J. Herbin - Lierre Sauvage, Moss Green - Graf von Faber-Castell, Alt Goldgrun - Rohrer & Klingner, Tokiwa-Matsu - Sailor to name just a few.

Red - Skrip Red - Sheaffer, Corn Poppy Red - Montblanc, Rouge Opera - J. Herbin, Oku-Yama - Sailor, Crimson - Diamine,

Purple - Amethyst - Pelikan Edelstein, Damson - Diamine, Ink of Witch - Bung Box

Brown - my favourite color :) Lie de The - J. Herbin, Hazelnut Brown - Graf von Faber-Castell, Brown - Noodler's, Terra di Sienna - Stipula and a lot more :)

If people want to test Blue 01, I can send, from next week, 3 samples of 2 ml approximately.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
