Hello everybody,

I was wondering if anybody had any suggestions for dip pen storage which includes holders and nibs. I know that a similar topic exists but it didn't really encompass the storage of such a large quantity of nibs and holders. The last time I counted I have about 6,000 to 7,000 various nibs all new old stock and about 50 or so dip pen holders many of which are also new old stock and are in their original boxes. Some of the boxes of nibs are still sealed some are open. I store some nibs in small polyethylene bags by model and company and leave others in their original box and put the boxes in bags or polypropylene containers. I want to make sure that however they are being stored will be safe for long term storage. I'm not sure if it's better to leave the nibs in the box or to remove them and put them in small bags. Any advice or suggestions would be great. Here are a few pictures.

This is a carton of E740 nibs there are 25 boxes of 144 ct. The original carton is marked Eagle Pencil Co.

Bloody Hell!

I have two questions, and I hope you'll forgive the impertinence of me asking them:

1. Why do you have so many?

2. What do you intend to do with them?

To answer your questions I have so many because I intended to use them or want to keep them for the future. I do a great deal of writing with dip pens though I have about 30+ vintage fountain pens. After using fountain pens for a while I started to realize there is something about dip pens that I really love. There is a certain intimate connect when using a dip pen to write that I don't get with anything I've use so far. I hope that helps to answer your questions to some extent. My hope is that they will last me the rest of my life if not longer.

Thanks for the explanation. You are very, very fortunate to be able to get your hands on such stocks. For myself I'll be lucky if I can persuade a seller to part with a dozen nibs. It's a different world over here, very cut off, and not one conducive to anyone who wants to write with a dip pen - like me - or even a fountain pen - also like me. Ah well, there's always pencils.

Thanks fountainpagan. Eagle Pencil Co is my favorite company by far. I have other Eagle Pencil Co holders but didn't post pictures of all of them as I have so many holders. Also the colored holders above are also Eagle Pencil Co though you can't tell from the picture. I can post additional pictures if you'd like.

Empty of clouds, I thinks it's just luck that I was able to get such quantities for very good prices. The carton picture above came from a military warehouse and contains 3,600 nibs which is more than half of what I have total. I also go to antique shops and get lucky their too. I got a box of 97 Esterbrook nibs for $6. You just never know what you'll find and where.

I understand. Here in New Zealand the chances of 'just finding' anything like this is pretty much zero. This country simply does not have this stuff anymore. It's a problem for me, and has made my desire to learn and use dip pens a great deal more difficult and close to prohibitively expensive. Karma no doubt!

I have heard of many people using different types of craft and took storage trays and boxes to store their various equipment. I only have two holders and about ten nibs so I store my holders in a drawer with my nibs in an old mint tin.

Nice! If those were mine I think I'd put a sachet or two of silica gel in that box. Moisture is the biggest enemy of steel nibs.

Goudy thanks for your suggestion. That particular box of Spencerian nibs is virtually flawless and all the nibs are rust free. There are only 139 nibs in the box though instead of 144. Would adding the silica gel have any adverse effects on the nibs or the box?

Would it be better to take the nibs out of the box and put them in a bag with the silica gel? Right now there in the box inside a bag.

I'd leave the nibs in the box, and either put the sachet in the bag with the box, or inside the box with the nibs. I'm not aware of any adverse side effects of silica gel on steel nibs or cardboard. It's simply a desiccant.

Yes, rice may work, too, but it's less effective.

Empty_of_Clouds I will send you a little assortment of nibs, if you want. I have enough nibs for the rest of my life, and am able to find enough more around where I live, anytime

Just let me know.

@Mob Mentality, yes I would very much like to see some other models of your dip pens.

Oh, no! Sorry, Fountainpagan. I was only giving an account of the realities of living here. Hadn't realised that it could be interpreted differently. I thank you for your very kind offer, most sincerely, but I'm really not the type of person anyone should be offering gifts. Frankly speaking, it's quite unnerving.

I am sorry, Empty_of_Clouds, I didn't want to unnerve you. Hell is full of good intentions, isn't it? ;)

Ok, I withdraw my offer, no problem. Are you felling better? :)

It's a relief, thank you. :)

Edit: my panic makes me seem ungrateful. I am sorry about that. Your thought was kindhearted and appreciated it. I'm not good with these things. It's not something I have a lot of experience with and I struggle to know what to do. In general I am a very simple person, in all meanings. Again, my apologies. I did not mean to offend.

You don't need to apologize, Empty_of_Clouds, at all.

Sometimes wanting to be helpful can make more harm than good, even if the intention is good.

I know you are not an ungrateful person, so, no panic, or worries. ;)

Now, please Mob Mentality, could you make us a little more jealous of all the tresors you hold, by showing us the pictures. :)

  All.

And I know this is only the tip of the iceberg.

I don't know how old you are, Mob Mentality, but I think that, even if you wrote 24 hours a day for the rest of your life, you would not run out of tools for it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
