Hello all,

Saying hello from Iraq, though very new here I have enjoyed what I read and have learnt a lot, and of course the "pens to buy" list multiplied by 10 suddenly.

Though have admired fountain pens for long time, I have just recently decided to start a collection, it's not easy task specially in Iraq, but I will do my best, travelling in few days to another country so will try to get some new pens and inks.

Hello Margana, a lovely name.

It all started when I went to university my father gave me a sheaffer imperial ii deluxe and a parker 25 which he used when he was in university, so I have a special love for parkers and sheaffers, but on my "to buy" list I have the pelikan, waterman, sailor, pilot, twsbi, kaweco, omas, aurora, lamy ....

Best regards

Welcome, Northstar !

Using and collecting fountain pens can be very rewarding. There are so many varieties. One is encouraged to write to others. Please ask questions freely. We all learn from the answers. Be safe in your travels.

God willing, may all be well with you.

Hello again,

Thank you all for your comments.

Ghost plane: in theory, yes I am suppose to find good vintage pens, haven't yet but will definitely watch for them (already got an early parker 45 from my uncle, and aunt owns a brand new parker 51 which she refused to give me).

Sasha Royale: yes I am really enjoying the pens I have, and yes we all learn by asking and I will be doing that often, specially if I come across some vintage pens that need care and maintenance.

Will let you all know what I will buy during my travel when I am back.

Morgana: yes that's a big list, actually I even have the particular models for each brand that I want to buy, but to minimize the list, the sheaffers and parkers and pelikan and waterman are of higher priority.

Best regards

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
