Chinese Pens Show And Tell.

That's interesting to know, however, if the Schmidt is a #6 they it's easily swapped with Bock or Jowo (and others), which would add to cost, but at least gives you a wide option to choose the nib you really want.

I sort of like the straight barrel shape, my only concern is always whether there is a sharp step after the threads.

But your're right , I just read the description that says the capped pen is 50g! wow, that's heavy! (but can we trust that measurement?...)

well, 50g certainly is a bit exaggeration, but roughly 32g ( if I remember it right ) or something along that , and well that step, its not exactly sharp but its not really smooth taper either, got a bit of chamfer but not quite rounded off ; I would not call it non intrusive either ; it's got a easily felt stepping there between the screw thread and the barrel , not significant so but definitely there

I had sort of guessed it might be an exageration...

they do look nice, I'll have to think it over

the blue resin seem the same used in my Fuliwen 017

for those who might be interested, the Marupen is slowly going out of stock now that all of its stock pretty much run dry after the years ; but guess what, the OEM Mfr now release it as Moonman N6 to some specific specialist online retailer, even with a new colour added ( but not all old colour available ) , good news is now its priced just a bit more than half as the original used to be but no you cannot get it off Shanghai JD, the main dealer for Moonman, cause they do not stock the pen ; in this state it come with a glass dip nib unit and also a Delike petite fude ( original had glass and a F)

Wing Sung 701 vintage mid 1990's is another model vintage Wing Sung had that come with the delta nib ( or duck bill nib as some puts it ) , its offered initially with 12K gold nib and latter also offered with steel nibs , in four different finishes , plain Steel, Nickel Grey lacquered , and Matt Satin Red or Green Mottled . C/C fill with the same section cross compatible with all models of Hero / Wing Sung that take this nib. Unlike the 765 , 701's nib tend to almost always an M instead of a F ; there is another model 701 that predate this model 701 but not related and yet another model 701 that come after this model 701 and again no relation

The new and newly delivered ( to me ) Liveinyou / LIY "Journey" in the Floral Fragrance finishes ... first impression regarding this new model after the brand change owner .. is ... good , feel good in the hand, a very beautiful and feminine acrylic pattern ( but OK for us men too ) , something new is that they've get away from generic Schimdt nib to having their own nib / nib unit with branding clearly stamped on the no.5 nib there. The cap is not a flush fit but only slightly ajar of the barrel , and the benefit is a better barrel to section transition with minimal stepping ( the threads ).

LIY also take a different approach to how to put the Nib Unit onto the pen, instead of screwing into the section they made a metal ( satin finished aluminum ) sleeve where the nib unit screw into and combined lock the section. It should ease repair and cleaning and also relief the section of stress better. The converter is new too instead of the usual Schmidt all plastic ones.

I've been eyeballing this one recently but haven't pulled the trigger yet. This may push me into getting one. Is the nib interchangeable with other brand #5's ? I'd be interested in putting a #5 stub in one if I got it.

It is amazing how Chinese pens have taken off in variety and quality in the past few years.

Or maybe it's just me starting to pay attention...

Jinhao 9019 "EF" nib running Birmingham Railroad Spike

OK trial done, short answer is - Yes you can put a no.5 in there , but with a bit of caveat emptor ; while the housing and the feed are fairly straight forward matter, the LIY nib seems to come in a lighter gauge than some of the other no.5 so when heavier gauge no.5 are fitted they kind of fit snug and need some coercing and you do not want to force it too much , but it can be done with patience on hand . Try Hero,Golden Star, Jowo, Schimdt, Bock, Pilot and even my Stipula 14K, all fit with various degree of easiness ( or difficulties ) Edited by Mech-for-i

Hero 1031 is another very nice workhorse mid range pen mid 2010's production ( this one is manufactured circa 2014 ) ; its a no frill , but also very nicely done all brass lacquered construction with some heft but not really weight a lot. You can judge the size by the standard no.5 sized steel nib in FM which is done in the classic Hero friction fit fashion. Its a standard Hero C/C fill aka 2.6mm opening , but a less than common ( for this price range and the kind of pen Hero offered ) screw cap mechanism. Can be had in this Industrial Orange, Basic Black, Teal & Lime Green.

Write very smooth with minimal but very workable feedback ( for its home language writing ). As shown also its kind of girthy for a pen of this range and thus offer an elevated degree of comfort in writing ; highly recommended if you want robust workhorse.

I was researching some pen for an elderly friend with history of issue with arthritis & CTS , and guess what I did find a somewhat OK pen for him , MUMO is a designer brand and they had fairly new ( just a couple months old ) fountain pen with a no.5 Schmidt nib but a fat fat barre; and cap ( 16mm barrel aka the same as Jinhao 159 but this pen is less tapered )

the home market had a vast array of after market parts and customization for Hero 100 , this is the less common custom EMPIRE set of flighter barrel and cap, this particular one also had a custom grind on the nib and an aftermarket metal inlaid set into the section , just like the Hero 330. The 2nd photo is another with tuned nib ( no custom grind , but tuned for wet flow ) & customized Celluloid Acetate Barrel with custom Iris sign inlaid, cap is stock but polished

My latest Hero 100 Custom , the re-issued Rice Bran Grey variant, with a custom Rose inlaid, and a custom grounded calligraphy Bull-Horn grind ( sort of a mix between Naginata, Zoom and Blade with a bulbous round triangular upturn profile on the tipping ), mated to Aunt's Rainbow flighter set of barrel and cap

Looks amazing! I'd love to see a writing sample and close up of the nib grind. It sounds very unique!

The Moonman N3 in all its finishes , really wish Moonman would do more of these original, yet clean design instead of keep giving us style cloning pens , PSA : get one now if you want this , stock seems running dry day by day

Was just about to order one, and then watched Chrisrap52's YouTube video and decided not at this time. I currently use the Hero 616 Doctor's pen, though I am not a big fan of hooded nibs. Instead of buying the 616 Plus, I decided, at the last moment, to order a Fuliwen 016. Probably did this because it reminds me of the Platinum Koi (which I cannot afford). Will order the yellow 616 Plus in the near future--to add to my yellow pen stash. Good to see you gave it a good review.

That Platinum Koi is absolutely gorgeous, but very pricey indeed. Your post made me go look for a Fuliwen 016 but I couldn't find one anymore. That's what I get for reading posts on here that are two years old. Settled for the Jinhao Centennial instead.

The big brother of the Wing Sung 500 , and here it is , the vintage Wing Sung 550 , often in its home market referred to as the " Angel Wing " referencing its clip design; just like the 500 it uses a Parker 75 style nib thin stem but then its got a different stem feed which is not interchangeable with the 500 and is whole lot more secure ; it was marketed mid to late 90's and was initially offered with a 12K gold nib, then a TigP plated gold colour steel ; this sample here I have is of the Silver Plated finishing and had a retrofitted EF nib ( easily identifiable by its being polished steel instead of gold colour but was never offered as an option, & can only be had as repair / service item ) , old Wing Sung C/C standard which mean you can practically use international C/C on it. Other than the shown one, it can also be had in Charcoal Grey finishing ( same surface pattern finishing ) , Matt Black , Black Lacquered, and a rather scarce brushed steel ... this EF nib tend to write really dry and its a god send if you had a wet runny ink

What a stunning pen. Just ordered it, found some old stock. Thanks for the tip!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
