My MB Starwalker Rubber -- both the FP and the RP-- has begun to feel sticky to the touch. I tried wiping it with rubbing alcohol--it has reduced the stickiness but not quite. Please help. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

I have heard these pens the rubber starts flaking off or disintegrating. I would use a sticky pen and not do something rash that would damage it.

My rubber Starwalker ballpoint and fountain pen have started to fall apart.

Rubber getting softer and silver inlaid lines popping out.

I never really used the actively, stored in cool place, away from harsh light.

Pretty disappointed in the quality and the current condition of my pens.

I'm assuming others experiencing the same thing?

Would be interesting what Montblanc is saying about it and what type of rubber was used.

I know a little about rubber and the different types of and their purpose and that they can get brittle over time if not used.

As you used your pen, I can can only imagine "softeners" migrating out over the time causing the sticky feel and and if gone the rubber becomes brittle and falls apart.

You can see that a lot on products that have a rubberized coating.

The storage condition doesn't really matter unless it is a very controlled environment.

Hence there are vulcanized rubbers that lasts very long. I have shoes that are 50 years old and they still can be bend without the rubber breaking, but the color had changed form white to yellow...

I know, it does not help you and I would be upset as well.

It’s more than likely a Silicon- based rubber, as this phenomenon usually happens to Silicon-based rubbers.

For this reason, I usually stay clear of any product that features a rubberized coating!

See if Montblanc isn’t willing to sort it out for you, as that’s not acceptable, especially for a Montblanc product!

Hi - I found this post while searching for information - happy to know that I am not the only one.

I have spoken to MontBlanc who advised me to drop the pen into service through one of the MB boutiques.  The assistant was super nice and helpful and gave the impression that others have also returned the pens before.  He said that my two pens would be sent for assessment.  He could not make any promises, but in the past, they have replaced the barrels and caps with new ones.  While this would be amazing, my only concern is that the same thing happens in the future.

I will update you when I know more -

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
