Lamy Safari - Clips

THRobinson

Recommended Posts

I saw some older (2010) posts about dismantling a LAMY Safar and Al-Star, not sure if the same or not.

Has anything changed for the Safari's over the years? I'm not sure the years of mine and I don't want to damage them trying to dismantle with non-applicable instructions.

Also, I see you can buy replacement caps and nibs etc from the LAMY site, but, what I am after is just the clip, in black.

I have a black LAMY Safari, and a red one... looking to buy the Al-Star Copper/Orange next, and I'd like to switch all the clips to black.

So... just curious

- Clips easy to swap?

- Can I buy just black clips without the caps?

Yes, you can change / replace a clip. You have to pop the top off from the inside. I think I used a pencil on one. My clip isn't black, it's silver

Following this thread with interest. I'd like black clips on some of my Al-Stars too!

I emailed LAMY to see if can get black clips... I know they exist, they have them on the charcoal/black pen, that brown one with the teddy bear head on it, etc... if I hear back I'll post the response.

Pen shop here in Canada said that if I ordered the Lamy from them, when I choose the nib size they can switch it to black for me instead of getting the pen and ordering a nib on its own which was pretty nice.

I've never used anything other than the M nib... I want to try a broad but, given how small I write I'm worried it'll be too thick, but same time, I love ink that has lots of shading and thinking a broader nib would show that off more. Especially since I plan to get that nice copper/orange and use either a turquoise ink in it, or that Plains of Abraham Canadian exclusive ink in it.

Lamy emailed me back with a Canadian email address to contact, who said yes, they can get black clips, none in stock but they will order some in 4-5 weeks when they place their order for more stock. No mention of price, so emailed back... depending how much they cost + shipping, I might buy one, may buy 3.

I'll keep you posted when I hear back.

Heard back already...

$6CAD for the clips... $18CAD for the nibs.

Idea was to do this with the Copper-Orange... quick photoshop side-by-side.

This looks really nice! I've got the Copper Orange and would love to swap to black. Let us know how the real thing turns out.

I'll post a photo... but, be a few months. 4-5 weeks before they order stock, then gotta wait for it to show up there, then ship to here.

Maybe I should buy a couple extra for future projects or people on here looking to do the same. :D

Here you go, the real deal. Of course my charcoal Safari isn't too happy about it, so I might have to ask Bureau Direct nicely whether they too can get clips on their own - thanks for the info that it's possible.

Ya, I think that looks much better than the polished metal clip.

I ordered 2 clips... though be a few months before I see them. Friday I'll order the pen with the black broad nib, never tried a broad nib before.

Took a while to find someone that had stock on Apache Sunset. From the Goulet review, looks like that Habanero was a real close match, but, from reviews/videos of the Apache Sunset, it has such nice shading that I had to grab it instead. Hoped to keep it local (Canada) but had to pay for shipping and exchange etc. from the USA. Not a good time right now to be buying across the border with the exchange rate. :)

Lovely! And I agree: it does look much better with a black clip. I presume that is the Lamy Copper Orange ink as well? What nib size did you use?

Actually it's Noodler's Apache Sunset, and a 1.1 italic. Trying to cut down on my oranges so didn't go for the matching ink!

My Apache Sunset is still stuck at the border. I debated that nib, until now I've only ever used M on, well, all my pens except the Noodler's Ahab with the flex nib.

Baby steps though, getting the B nib for mine.

Buy at least 10 of those!

I had to buy a charcoal Safari to change the clip and nib on my white safari... the frankenpen was adopted by mi wife. I´m waiting for anyone else to adopt another frankenpen and swap nibs and clips with my Vista.

I debated it... would rather black on the copper, red... black is 50/50 since polished metal goes with black and adds more contrast than having an all black pen. Then have a few extras for future pens.

Though, likely after the copper/orange, I won't be getting any more Lamy pens, I'd rather try a few other makes.

I saw a pen that I loved years and years ago, and just the other day found out what it was, Rotring 600, so that's on my list, as well as a vintage Pelikan 400 (just 400, maybe 400N, not the 400NN... I like the squared off end on the barrel of the 400).

Both well outta my budget so... Lamy for now.

Love it! Have always preferred black clip, black nib combo.

That's wildly costly, I'd think a charcoal transplant might be the better option = two complete pens?

edited to add, do keep the conversion history with these pens, so they don't muddy the LE lineage.

Perhaps give it an official name, like Copper Harbor convert??? : )

"Wildly" costly? ... $6CAD?

$33CAD for the charcoal pen, which I like... but if I swap clips, then I'd have a charcoal Lamy with a silver clip... and that just wouldn't do... I'd then have to pay another $6CAD to switch it back. :D

Official name... hmm, not sure what I'd call it... Copper Harbor? Why the Harbor?

$6 clip $18 nib, close enough for a charcoal.. subtle play on Copper Harbor region mining, as in mining for Copper Burst parts. Humor intended from sleepy person may not have worked? :P

The 1.1i is a good affordable way to try a stub, but in all honestly I don't find it a particularly pleasant nib to use; prefer my stubs tipped. One of my fav Lamy nibs is a B though, so hope you enjoy yours just as much.

How about "Copper Orange Cu"? For "Clip upgrade" (and the chemical symbol for copper).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
