The Super Duper Co-Razy Parker Penman Sapphire - Blue - Comparisons Psp

Recommended Posts

The mess is massive but, disappointed that Blue Velvet looked NOTHING like PPS (I was convinced it would be a dead ringer) I set about having a mix.

I don't own many blues but after a few goes (and next time I'll use a little less water) I think I have a pretty close match.

10 parts Diamine Blue Velvet

2.5 parts Diamine Majestic Blue

10 parts water.

My mix on the left - Amber's original sample on the right.

I'll pop the original in the post on Monday.

Thank you so much for letting me see this fabled ink in the flesh. It really is unique.

Wow that is amazing!!!

Thanks for noting this ink looks different in each pen, AmberLea.

After getting called everything but a child of god on here for daring to suggest that I see it as a greenish blue....

You have brought out shades of it that are sometimes greenish or purple-ish on here in this thread.

Many thanks.

Do you want do a CRV? You have a bunch of blues, and we'd love to see them.

amber lea, we have no idea whom you are responding to..... maybe you mean it to be that way...

Torstar, we would love to have you participate. You don't have to give up your beloved three bottles. If you want to play, I can mail you one of the forty sheets like those above. All are on the same paper, with the same pen. I'd mail it to you with other goodies. You write back on the same paper with any blue inks that you like.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Ok, here are some more comparisons.

Parker Penman Sapphire is in the middle (3)

fpn_1437284533__corazy2.jpg

I am not so happy with the pen this time. I used a Jinhao #6 nib in a pen holder to get a consistent pen, but I'm not so happy with it. It seems a bit wet for my tastes.

As well, the handwriting is a bit more crapulous this time, due the fact that I am suffering from a cold, bronchitis and the dreaded lurgy, all at the same time. I have taken patent nostrums, which may account for the scribbles, but I miss the old days when cough syrup had morphine in it. Pseudephedrine isn't quite the same.

Get well soon!

2, 3 & 4 look very similar on my screen are they as close in real life? That PPS is a slippery character :)

Please translate what the "Dreaded lurgy" might be? I don't speak Australian and I am sincerly curious!

Lurgy - a non-specific illness that makes you feel "Blerrgggh"*

Generally includes runny nose, (as in it gets up and runs around your face), purple spots, stomach that rebels at the thought of food while simultaneously complaining you haven't fed it since the previous day and, amongst other symptoms, a brass and drum marching band taking up residence in your head.

There is no cure, but they symptoms can be drowned out by copious applications of Drambuie.

Again, the elusive and slippery PPS defies comparison. I thought I had a couple of perfect matches, but only Liberty's Elysium comes really close; Christmas Fresh Scent is also close, but a little less so. Voilà:

And this just in: Inky has the blues. Film and soundtrack available at better record stores everywhere...

Way cute!

Yes, I think LE is a nice match up. LE is also water resistant.

Soon after making this post, I retired to my sick-bed. I was followed by two young nubile females of the feline persuasion.

After being jumped on for a while (I think they wanted to make sure I was still alive, so that they could continue to be kept in the life style to which they aspired), I picked them up, took them out to the lounge room and asked my wife if I could swap them for two young nubile females of the human persuasion, just to keep me warm.

My wife said no.

With malice aforethought, afterthought and in-betweenthought.

I went back to bed.

I am a ninny. I packed up my PPS CRV, dropped it in the mail to AD and then realized I hadn't scanned it. Argh! The saving grace is that my scanner's color rendering is abysmal (and that's a generous assessment).

Tropical Blue doesn't come close to PPS, it's far too tropical. I tried Sailor Souten (thanks webgeckos!); it's much closer and shades nicely but ...

Mostly I'm relieved that I didn't go head over heels for PPS. *whew*

dcwaites, I hope you make a quick recovery. When I was sick and my cat started hanging around, I got nervous. ;)

No lusting in my heart, I just wanted body warmth. None of the rest of me was even capable of co-operating...

Ottoman Azure is pretty darn close and I'm still a fan of DCSuperShow Blue. Noodler's Blue is less vibrant but it is easier to clean out than any other ink on that page.

Ottoman Azure is close, and that's why it was the base of one of Faux Penman Sapphire blends.

Noodler's Blue is a superb ink in its own right, except it is sometimes a very slow drier on dense paper (i.e. Nu:Elite). Diluting with 40% water fixes that without changing the colour very much.

Lake Placid Blue is much like Noodler's Blue and would be a good alternative for those who want a lighter pure blue but don't (for whatever reasons) want to use a Noodler's ink.

I find that for me, in many pens, DC SS Blue is just a bit too wet, but that is because I like drier nibs and drier inks, and is not a criticism of the ink.

I sent mine directly to Amberlea as my scanner also has lousy color rendering. I included in my comparisons Diamine Asa blue, and two extinct colors: Omas Roma 2000 blue, and, for fun, I pulled out a bottle of Private Reserve Naples Blue that's been sitting half-empty since about 1999. It's from the first generation of private reserve inks, when they were still printing out labels in the computer using Avery labels. It has considerably darkened over the years to a fair equivalent to PPS. But you'll see in the scan, should it ever arrive.

I just sent in a payment of twenty dollars so I might be covered on the next couple of rounds of insanity.

I have a pen or two that might do justice for these tests, I'm a little low on blue ink, just one bottle that has not been mentioned and two different brands of cartridges.

My scanner stinks, so I will just mail back my doodles and chicken scratchings.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
