Please, allow me to start by saying thank you mmg112 for sending me samples of all new Franklin-Christoph's writing fluids (and much more!). I appreciate it a lot and I hope the reviews I've prepared are enough to repay you :)

Franklin-Christoph is one of fairly new pen makers. I had three of their pens and they were all good writers. The company is headed by Scott Franklin and operates from North Carolina. I like company's approach to clients (sales directly to us) and they're designs.

Franklin-Christoph offers not only pens but also notebooks, pen cases, wallets and inks. I was huge fan of Olde Emerald from first generation of their inks. It used to be my favourite ink for a while. At the moment however the bottle's long gone and I keep fond memories of this exceptional writing fluid.

I was surprised to hear they've stopped producing first generation of their inks, especially after I took a look at new colors. First generation colors were rather unique, second generation colors are rather generic. And that's not an advantage to my eyes. Being boring in ink market may be safe when you're Pelikan or Sheaffer, but for smaller player it's risky. Just my opinion.

If you happen to know who makes they're ink, I'm eager to know.

The second generation of FC inks counts eight inks with uninteresting names (Black Magic, Dark Denim, Olde Emerald - those were cool names; Blue 72, Emerald 357 are NOT cool names)

  1. Blue 72
  2. Brown 732
  3. Classic Black
  4. Dark Chocolate
  5. Emerald 357
  6. Midnight Emerald
  7. Noir et Bleu
  8. Red 187

Emerald 357 is called after pantone color it's supposed to match. I dislike the color.

Verdict: No, no, no. It's ugly. But if you enjoy such colors this one shouldn't disappoint you.

Thank you, as always, for the awesome reviews.

I'm really, really sad to see Olde Emerald replaced by this.

Thanks for the review, Vis. Unfortunately FC won't say who makes their inks...only that it is US based and none of the usual suspects (Noodler, etc). I know FC follows the ink reviews and pen reviews and is very responsive to their customers. Maybe Scott will rethink his current ink lineup.

Thanks for the review. I don't need this color, though.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

I like the color, but not for writing.

Recalls for me Sheaffer Green which I used in the early '90s. The F-C shade is darker, though, if memory serves. Makes me want to check my old notebooks for the Sheaffer Green.

Just a note, this ink wasn't meant to replace the Olde Emerald ink, but is just in our lineup as our base green to match our Piper cartridges. Midnight Emerald is the first venture into "other green" (my personal favorite) and of course more will be coming. We've found the new ink to be much more consistent from batch to batch and better performing overall.

The next inks out will be a black cherry and a dark purple, names to be determined. Should be about mid August that we'll have these ready.

Seth...thanks so much for the feedback. I'm expecting great things out of Franklin-Christoph. Any plans to create another Olde Emerald (green leaning toward yellow) ink?

ETA: It's been my experience that all the FC 2nd generation inks are extremely well behaved.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
