J. Herbin is known to be the oldest name in ink production in the world, and their inks 'l'Encre de la Tete Noire", "Perle des Encres," (The Jewel of Inks) and "l'Encre des Vaisseaux" (The Ink of Ships) were produced as early as 1700.

M. Herbin was a sailor, and from his many journeys to India he brought back to Paris formulas for manufacturing sealing wax. His special lacquer formula improved the quality of the seals in adhesion and neatness, helping him to become famous throughout the kingdom.

J. Herbin is also the oldest name in ink production in the world.

By 1700, the company was producing “l’Encre de la Tete Noire,” followed by “Perle des Encres,” (The Jewel of Inks) and “l’Encre des Vaisseaux” (The Ink of Ships).

J. Herbin made ink for Louis XIV, and a black ink for the sole use of Victor Hugo, author of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Miserables. These formulas still reside in our company headquarters in Paris.

At the moment company belongs to Exaclair Inc, that has rights to brands like Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Brause or G. Lalo.

I know many people find J. Herbin inks too muted and boring but I enjoy most of them. I believe J. Herbin makes amazing and unique ink, however I don't like some of their colors. And I have problem with Larme de Cassis. The name is great and the color, well, it depends on the nib and paper. I can't say I dislike it but it didn't amaze me.

The color is rather muted and while it's quite interesting in Kaweco Sport Classic turned to eyedropper broad nib it's not that rich in Kaweco Al Sport B nib feed from converter. I'll need to try it in few more pens.

Darn; I just bought this and was hoping it would have a slightly deeper colour.

We seem to buying the same ink of late!

I'd be interested to know your thoughts and experiences on eyedropping the Kaweco.

I love Larmes de Cassis, and will always have a bottle. It is a sweet, soft, vintage mauve. I especially love how it appears on cream or ivory papers. This is one ink that every time I use it I have that warm gush of affectionate thoughts: "Oh I love this ink! It is so perfect!" :wub:

This ink is also amazing for watercolor painting flowers!

LOL! Yes, well, I am a writer! ;)

 

I have a very different and distinct personality and preferences. Most of the time the things I like are quite different from the general crowd...but I am glad. It makes my life and the things I create all that more unique and expressive of my own soul. And I love having so many outlets to express myself! Inks, papers, and pens are just the beginning to setting a stage for self-expression and my personal form of renewal and joy. ♥

 

This forum is such a wonderful place of information, opinions, friendship and diversity! Even when groups of people feel differently on an issue it is nearly always expressed and accepted in such a kind manner. (Perhaps only a few times I have witnessed a bit of contention in a few heated conversations, but for the most part, everyone here is quite kind.)

 

I do like that there is such a wide variety of inks to choose from! There really is an ink for everyone I think! :)

Actually, I think it looks quite respectable on cream paper. Too washed out on white for my taste. And I've been called many things, but never an old lady hippie. B)

 

I wonder what it would do with just a few drops of Poussiere de Lune? Could be interesting.

I have mixed Larmes de Cassis with a few other purple inks to see what variations will come. Some I liked, some I didn't. I don't have a bottle of PDL so I can't try that, but MB Lavender Purple is very similar....maybe a little ink mix test will happen soon ;)

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
