Hello. I wasn't sure which forum this should be posted in, but I thought this might be a safe bet.

 

There are a few pens that I've seen on AliExpress and TaoBao that aren't available on the 'Bay that I would really like to get.

 

How do these sites work? Any pointers you may have for someone who has never used these sites before?

If you're outside China, your best bet to get these pens are to go through a third party site. I use dotdotbuy myself, but that's in Chinese. For people in the States, try an English site like 65daigou.com

 

Essentially, Taobao is like China's eBay. And if I'm not wrong, Aliexpress usually requires high volume upfront for purchase, much like a wholesaler's site.

Thanks :) I've never heard of those sites you'd suggested before - I'll have to check them out after work.

 

I think Aliexpress is for small volume/single orders while Alibaba is the one for high volume/wholesale purchases. :)

These sites work by buying the product for you and having it shipped to their warehouse. From their warehouse, you then use a courier service to your own country.

 

I've seen mininum orders of 10000 on Aliexpress. Alibaba is the name of the whole organisation which owns Taobao, Tmall, Alipay and Aliexpress (and a few other companies).

No, Aliexpress is a single order site. I use it a lot and it is safe and very reliable.

There are both wholesale orders on aliexpress and individual orders.

 

 

For buying on taobao I use mistertao because his site is in English and has always reliable (no affiliation)

Neat! MisterTao looks like it's pretty straightforward and easy to use. :D

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
